Basically, I'm looking for a manga that occasionally jokes or makes light of serious/tragic topics (totally paraphrased from wikipedia).

I'm thinking something like Murcielago... I read Franken Fran a while ago, so I don't quite remember much of it, but I think something like that would be along the lines of what I'm searching for too.

I'm really okay with any genre or touchy things, but I haven't updated my lists since last year, so please ignore those. 😛 Ideally, I'm looking for something under seven volumes, but that's not a major concern. Ongoing manga are fine.

Thank you! 😀
Those are more or less exactly what I'm looking for. 😛

still looking because apparently I've read all of those D: (sorry)

Definitely going to reread Abnormal-kei Joshi though because I seem to have forgotten most of it. 🙁

Well you could try the Black Humor category, though not all fit.

Have you read anything by Kago Shintaro?

Given what you're looking for, you could start with the available oneshots from Kijin Gahou (in particular, "Fetus Collection"), and move on to his other works if those appeal to you.

I definitely second Dorohedoro.
Nickelodeon, maybe?
It's funny because the category is call "black humor" for some reason, even though the term is dark humor. Black humor sounds like it'd be jokes that black people would enjoy more than other ethnicities or jokes about black people...

...Oh, even a Google search of "black humor" brings up jokes made by, for and about black people. 🤣 I don't know where the term "black humor" comes from, but I'm guessing it's a direct translation of a Japanese category. Strange how the manga/anime community sometimes uses direct translations or certain words when there's already commonplace, better fitting terms in English..

No, the term black humour is the original - it's a translation from humour noir, which was the name given to the genre by the French guy who first defined it in the early 20th century. I don't know when dark humour arose as an alternative.

As for recommendations, maybe Oyasumi Punpun. I'm not sure whether it would be comedic enough though. Some of the stories in What A Wonderful World! (like ch. 9 and ch. 17 for example) by the same mangaka would definitely qualify, even though it doesn't even have the comedy tag.
