@joentjuh, but there are yaois where the main chara who's believed to be hetero is seduced by his pal/friend who's gay. can't remember the titles, haven't even read them 'cause i don't like yaoi/yuri, but seen some scans, read some summaries and there ARE stories like that. Why aren't there any where the situation is reversed? :<
That's apparently called homoromantic heterosexuality (sexually attracted to the opposite gender, romantically attracted to the same gender), which is the exact opposite of what I mentioned in my earlier post. And yaoi just does that because it seems sweet, not because it ever actually happens in real life! 🤣 (Who'd want to be jeered at as a 'creepy' 'fag' / 'dyke' their entire lives when they can just get with an opposite-gender partner and be done with it? It's only common sense)
Heteroromantic homosexuality is apparently pretty common (there are plenty of gays and lesbians who're in conventional marriages with kids and all); probably because, deep down inside, everyone wants to be 'normal'. And yeah, it actually happens -- at least according to all the chatrooms on the web...though heaven only knows how much you can believe them!

for two days in a row i've been reading on various forum boards posts of girls who happened to be in such a situation. quite a dilemma 😛 "he's my best friend... but at the same time we're snogging whenever we got a chance... but isn't he attracted to men?!... i sooo wanna shag him... but what if i do?!... he would never forgive me... he acts like he wants it too... but he always says that he doesn't want any commitment... wouldn't it make him bi?!" and so on. i'm wondering where such situations are coming from. and why? and thus my question about any fiction with the idea.
i really liked "Bob & Rose", it got quite detailed on that. and boy! there was some heavy tension between two charas XD pity i can't find it anywhere online to refresh my memory :<

i just googled every phrase hitting on the subject. and all i could find were lots of forum boards and journals and that's all :/ surprised how many people deal with it. in majority of cases it's just awkward and unsolved, but there are some cases where the guy and gal got married 😛 anyway, it go ...

I know you were looking for FICTIONAL accounts but this is probably more like what you're looking for than anything else. It is condensed, so it might be less psychological than what you stated a preference for, too, I know, but if you read between the lines, well.... 😀 Anyway, at least it might spark some more ideas from the rest of the commenting community?
There is one other manga that comes close that I don't think has been mentioned and it's more psychological than most of the others and it provides a bit of a unique twist on the girl dresses as boy and boy falls in love with her idea. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name but if I find it, I will definitely post it, here. And, although it's a yaoi manga. it does touch on the very topic of this thread plus it isn't NEARLY as explicit as almost all other manga. So, here's a brief description of it: The mother dresses her son up as a girl since she doesn't want his father finding them. She knew his father wanted to have him inherit his wealth, but she didn't want him growing up under such constricted circumstances. The mother passes away and the boy starts to work in a cafe/bar, under his real identity as a boy. One day the father locates him but under the illusion that he is not his son but his daughter. He sends a gay lawyer to persuade his 'daughter' to take up the inheritance with the added incentive that if the lawyer does persuade 'her' to join the ranks of the family, the lawyer will be able to marry his 'daughter' and receive all the wealth that comes with it, as well. In any case, the lawyer, despite being gay (yes, it is confirmed that he is actually gay) starts to develop an attraction for the boy when he poses as a girl. I think it's useful to note, here, that for most of his life the boy actually thought he WAS a girl.
Um, if I'm going to be reprimanded for double posting I think that's highly unfair since I did it unintentionally, I already explained how the situation occurred (which then disappeared from the edited post), I can't delete the post AND, most of all, I am unable to link the posts together, myself. Kthx.

Only girl the gay guy likes is his friend the Main Character, but it doesn't help she has always looked boyish anyway :p. Later on the gay guy sort of becomes one of a bad guy.
The first one, I disagree, because I don't see that, at all. I see a guy who was mistakenly 'outed' as a gay guy and is now chasing around the girl who 'outed' him for revenge.

This is true, I remember reading some yaoi like that... But in those cases the main was indeed presumed straight only to later fall in love with his counterpart, the problem with those that I read were that you were simply told (or it was insinuated) that the main was straight whilst already in the first chapter they were showing signs they were becoming attracted to the same sex... No credibility as to their presumed sexuality... Could have unknowingly been gay all his life for all I know.
- Sorenari ni Shinken nandesu. is one such as those if I'm not mistaken. (sweet story, but still not quite 'gay guy fall for (straight) girl' or 'straight guy falls for gay guy'.
Love =/= attraction. Every single one of those stories you mentioned never has the straight guy feeling sexual attraction for MEN. It's just one single person who happens to be male. Nor do you ever even see it hinted that the straight character feels an attraction for any other member of the same sex. In that case, it would behoove me to point out that you are not giving an equal benefit of the doubt to the person's 'gayness' as opposed to the one you're giving to their 'straightness'. Which I should then point out ends up being much like what the other poster did for bisexuality, a form of gay erasure just on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Also, apparently yaoi has quite a precedent for this kind of thing, hence the question from the OP on a MANGA forum. I'm told that homosexuality in Japan is viewed quite a bit differently than it is in Western culture. Specifically, it is viewed as less of a sexual orientation and more of a social behaviour, as long as the 'players' don't step TOO far outside of the bounds of the conformist society that is Japan.
Actually, that last manga you mentioned is PRECISELY like a straight guy falling for a gay guy. It was never suggested that the guy was NOT in love with his wife and ditto for experiencing sexual attraction to her, specifically, and women, in general. By that logic, then, one would have to accept that he was either a gay guy who fell in love with a woman or a straight guy who fell in love with a gay guy, using the very rationale you, yourself, gave us.

Again, sexual orientation =/= love. And, so, in the same way, neither does romantic orientation. Lesbians and gays are in conventional marriages not because they are attracted to their opposite sex spouse but because they are desperately trying to fit into a heteronormative society. Calling that a hetero-romantic attraction gives off some rather obvious signals of homophobia, as well, BTW. .

thx guys for your comments. they're very helpful, yeeeet... these still are not 100% what i had in mind ;P. most of the plots focus on competition of two charas over a boy. they fight against each other and in the end fall for each other. i was looking for something more psychological, without such cliches.
and yes, calstine, i guess that after a gay falls for a girl he can count himself as bi 😛 . but i guess there are some guys out there who strongly believe they're gay... until they eventually fall in love with a girl.
and i like another thing that you mentioned: sexuality is one thing and romantic attraction is another. i believe that when you start to adore somebody for who he/she is to such an extent that he/she becoms sexually attractive to you, it is a perfect way to a healthy well founded relationship 🙂
Once more, just because a gay guy falls in love with a girl, it does not mean he isn't gay.
Ooh, BTW, s-e-c, that's the kind of story I was hoping to find on here when I searched this topic, myself. Thank you for pointing it out!

Isn't that a form of bisexuality, then? Or maybe they're just awfully lucky...after all, it's much easier in every way to be with a woman than another man; and unlike people who're just pretending to be straight, these guys are actually happy. Talk about being lucky in love! 🤣
Anyway, the only such series I know of is Utopia of Homosexuality (the title is totally misleading) And I don't consider it a spoiler, since the pairings are obvious from like...the first page.
Edit - Early days yet to say, but I'm pretty certain Crush on You will turn out like that eventually.
Edit #2 - There was also an instance where a gay guy and a lesbian got married and had a kid; Love My Life. But they are NOT the main couple (the MC is the daughter), so I dunno whether you'll be interested.
Ugh, is there a way I can link my first and last post on this thread together? I forgot, after having been on one that does it for so long, that this forum doesn't automatically put consecutive posts by the same person, together, at the same time, it doesn't allow you to delete the post, either.
Edit #3 - Oh, and Cardcaptor Sakura too, somewhat. Guy and girl, fighting over another guy...and eventually ending up with each other. But since it's a manga for kids, the subject of sexuality is never actually brought up.
Edit #4 - Found the name for that 'condition' -- it's called heteroromantic homosexuality; sexually attracted only to the same gender, romantically attracted only to the opposite gender. Lately, the number of sexuality types is getting a little out of hand, imo. Whatever happened to the good old "everyone is bi"? Lol, kidding 🤣
That being said, you could hardly expect a manga to deal with such a complicated issue in a serious or realistic way...
First paragraph: No. And what that is called is bi-erasure, BTW. Just on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Second last paragraph: No, again. Asexual Aromantic, right here. I could easily fall in love with a guy or girl. The thing is, people are erroneously equating love with sex, here. One big difference that makes that impossible. Love is non-linear while sexuality is linear.

OK, I'm going to be that person again, but I was going to reply to this seriously until I saw that the discussion dated from July 2011. Can we please not necro stuff to continue a long-dead discussion or to add recommendations for people long gone? If new recommendations are wanted, fine, but I doubt anyone is checking back 4 1/2 years later.
The OP is indeed gone so there is no point for a continued discussion despite the views but the ones still interested should read up on Freddie Mercury who devoiced his wife because of his homosexuality. Both continued to love each other afterwards despite finding partners again due to their strong non sexual attraction. He left his London home to her rather than his partner! None really figured out if he was gay or bi in the end as she wasn´t his only female partner in his later years.
The gay porn actor Jack Wrangler also got quite the attention when he fell in love married the older Margaret Whiting despite their incompatible sexual orientations and both real live stories are way more interesting than any comics i can recommend so i will leave it here.
I also read EU/US comics and am a librarian.

Sorry, didn't know that the OP, and ONLY the OP, could get suggestions for new and different manga. Apparently you and I (and, of course, residentgrigo) couldn't possibly be reading this thread for precisely that reason...? I just ran across this thread when I made my first reply on this thread, after all. Thanks.
