i think you should start with wish ( its short and its by CLAMP) the story is so cute!
i also recommend the Demon Ororon, this story is also short, sentimental, and very well written and that Gothic sort of way!
start with the short stuff and the most popular authors like Watase and Clamp use them to figure out what you like because they have a variety of stuff then work off of that.
And remember its cool to borrow manga from people as long as you promise to treat it with care!

And do not be afraid of Shounen, Naruto is a great read and POT (Prince Of Tennis) Rocks

well have fun and don't be afraid to just pick and choose
and for the money problem look on ebay you can find some great deals....but most importantly HAVE FUN 😀

Lol my dad says the same thing. Thinks its bad to waste money on a book I can read in 30 minutes when i can spend it on a "real" book. Glad I have my own credit card...lets see recs...I have been reading Beaty Pop although I have never read Vampire Knight so I don't really know what you kind of stuff you are into that is shoujo and really cute. Also I recommend Aishiterus Baby(So cute but lots of crazy girls, how can someone be jealous of a preschooler!?), B.O.D.Y., Fushigi Yuugi(one of the first manga I read), Ceres(made by the same person as Fushigi Yugi), XXXholic, Wallflower(absolutely hilarious and nice art) and Hot Gimmick(a very dramatic story). Oh and recently I read Change Guy which I liked but its mostly about fighting just to warn you. I can't think of that many more titles since I read mostly yaoi, but as for anime I recommend Tenshi na Konamaiki which also has a manga Cheeky Angel. Its a bit shounen(That means for boys in case you didn't know) and the art is a bit off putting, but the story and characters are really cute and funny. Once you watch a couple of eps you don't even notice that the main guys are not that good looking.
Um and you also might like watching dramas which which you can do on crunchyroll (dot) com and the dramas I recommend are Full House ( I was hooked that first ep when Bi was there without a shirt 😀 ), Tokyo Juliet(Evil fathers suck), Smiling Pasta, Meteor Garden(Its based off of Hana Yori Dango which is a manga, anime, and Japanese Drama. This is the Chinese drama which I prefer), and My Name is Kim Sam Soon(Soooo cute I watched it all through chemistry and still passed). These were my favorites you can watch anime there too.
Oh and there is Mars which I recommend the manga and drama although it is a bit mature and seriously the most dramatic of them all.

Alrighty, if you're a romance fan you've got to try MeruPuri. It's by the same mangaka as Vampire Knight and it's only 4 volumes long. There's also Imadoki! at 4 volumes and if you don't mind manwha there's Kill Me Kiss Me at 3.
