You know those manga where the female/male go through great struggle and then end up living "happily ever after" anyways? Well, is there one where they actually break up?
Better yet if it was one of those action and/or fantasy types where the girl actually dies instead?
Some of the ones I've read were....
Mucha Kucha Daisuki
Phalene
KamiKaze
Basilisk

Solanin --> completed, slice of life, no action/fantasy
Eden --> ongoing
Battle Royale --> check spoiler for details on this one
Your description applies to everyone but the main protagonist
Gantz --> has what you're looking for, but since it's ongoing hard to say what will happen

That's not that tragic.... I don't think it was at least.

Love Story, Killed though it's a bit on the mature side
That Summer It's not that tragic but the pair don't end up together
Life's not about waiting for the thunderstorm to pass... It's about learning how to dance in the rain
Give a man a match, and he'll be warm for a minute, but set him on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
