Well... let's say if you're caught reading manga or watch anime around the people I know, they'll probably play 21 questions with you. Then prolly talk about how you're weird behind your back... In any case, my close friends know I read manga, watch anime, play WoW, etc. etc. and they're cool with it. Those are the people whose opinions matter to me.

My parents; My mom hates it because I'm more than addicted to it..and my dad hates it because he thinks I waste my money on them.
But my mom is more okay with me buying them.
Some of my friends don't like it because of the way you read it...they think it's weird and so I ignore them a bit. XD
But with my friends who like manga, I have fun. I can interact, and exchange ideas on a manga..and currently we have a trade system in which I lend her my manga/manhwa and she lends me hers. XD It rocks since I read manga free and it makes me spend a nice day in school. XD

I have this one friend that hates manga/anime. She says it freaks her out with the big eyes and stuff and that's it's weird and freaky. Pfft, she's never even opened one up.

I have some sympathy for people who just aren't interested (as opposed to those who make fun of people, call it "stupid" etc.) since I used to be one of them. 🤣 I didn't actually read manga until probably 10 years after I first heard about it - my initial reaction was something like, "How weird that so many people in Japan read comics..." Having only seen American comics, I really didn't understand the appeal, until I eventually read a manga I picked up at the library on a whim. 😃

My dad and grandfather is opposed to me and my sister (it's how I got her to read manga such as Love Hina or Negima even though she's like 11 but enjoys it) reading all the manga.
My grandpa teases me about that so I don't mind since he can be very traditional, on the other hand however, my dad despises it. He usually tells me that I should grow up and such because it's for kids. I already explained to him many times of how it's different for every age group and that stories is not all the same. It's similar to that of say novels and such, but in a graphical form for easier reading. Since he's stubborn, he can't even listen to what I say, so I just ignore him nowadays if he ever brings up that topic.
If say compared to the story writing difference between North America and Japanese Manga (manhwa can be included in this category), there's just a significant difference on what type of values or prioritized or how they want to convey.
I fully and completely understand if they're not interested in it. Some of my friends say some of it is just 'trash'. That I can somewhat understand if you take a look of all the cliched plots they'd use or such, but hey whatever right? I like my 'trash' and it's cliches, because it gives me something to read. It's better than not reading nothing at all right?

hmmm... the only manga haters I know are a few of my friends who don't like it because they see it as childish, and only know about them since one of my friends picked a graphic novel up one day thinking it was a book. Big suprise when they found out comics go for more than 30 pages at a time! lol. They've been making fun of them since.
Of course, since then I've been wise enough not to tell them i read manga. 🙄

I think almost all manga haters either have not read any of it/do not know what it really is, or ended up reading stuff that did not suit their interests and then gave up on manga without looking for a genre that was more their taste. Then again, there must be a few people out there that just find reading manga a waste of time. Who knows. 😃
Until I were in high school they were practically 90% of people I know. Now that I go to university, I frequent more open-minded people (it wasn't really difficult anyway). Only fewe of them read manga, but many read american comics, so at least they don't have prejudice against this stuff.
But it's not really their fault, here in Italy there is a strong censorship for anime, both for contents and for visual.
Just to let you have some example the Italian title for "Slayers" is "Un incantesimo dischiuso tra i petali del tempo per Rina" that means approximately "A spell slighty opened between petals of time for Rina". WTF that meant? Totally nothing, but who changed it thought the original title was too hard for kids. The blood in this kind of anime is usually re-painted blue. The dialogues are modified to be understood by mere kids and so it's normal that more grown up guys are diffident about this kind of shows. Everything about anime is adapted to kids, even when the show isn't intended for kids, so it's normal that people made fun of me because I read "Fruits Basket" or stuff like that in high school, they simple compared what they saw in TV with every manga/anime in the world.

Yeah, i know someone that hates manga. She thinks the big eyes and weird drawing is freaky and scary. She's only seen it, hasn't even tried to read it >( But i guess people are entitled to their own opinions, not like I'd force her to like it.

Most people at my school. And the closest they can get to otakus are the narutards who watch the english Naruto. The only people that know I'm an otaku are my close friends. I'd like it to stay that way.

Heck, yes.
A 'close' friend of mine hates the stuff with an outright passion. Well, I perhaps hated should be more appropriate. She hated it up until about a week ago when she discovered that the guy she's got s crush on reads it.
Needless to say, she's recently been nagging me to draw her some -free- Manga-style comishies for her XD
Hah. As if.
Still, if people don't enjoy Manga/Anime, then that's purely their own choice. Personally, I believe you ought to keep an open mind- if anything they're most likely the ones missing out by refusing to so much as watch/read even one episode/chapter.
