My friends have been there as part of an orchestra field trip. My English teacher went with them.... The crime rates there should be lower. When they came back my English teacher explained how they don't even need to lock up their bikes before entering school because it's that safe. There were pictures. Pictures with lots of bikes. A lot of bikes....

But the whole culture is different. I'm Chinese, so my culture is similar. But let's just say that we're brought up to resist crime and not be part of it. It's drilled into our heads, "This is bad. Never do it."

And in the U.S., gangs are common, and criminals also have kids. 'nuff said.

The only reason why I'd want to go to Japan is so I can go clothes shopping.

I just went in June/July and it was amazing! Truthfully, people are soooo much nicer there. A friend of mine left his wallet at a restuarant and the owner found it and ran like 3 blocks to return it to him. I would definetly trust them over the US Gov't.

A friend of my family's went to Japan on vacation and just to test the theory he left his brand new digital camera on a bench on purpose. Just like for your friend, they ran after him in order to give it back.

....yeah.....I doubt the validity of those exaggerated truth promoted by a different kind of mob phenomenon. But I can't say I have evidence to prove them incorrect, only the greed is human nature.
