There are people like me, you know, that actively attempt to balance the number of 1s and 10s that they give.
My overall ratings average out to around 5.5, though it fluctuates a bit. It stands to logic that if something can actually warrant a ten for exceptional quality, something can also actually warrant a one for its exceptional failures. In theory, all titles should produce a normal curve if hypothetically rated from an objective standpoint. I do my best to simulate that, and so 1s and 2s and 3s often appear on my lists.
It would seem to me that my approach is the most reasonable and methodical, which from my perspective makes it the best. That doesn't make it objectively so, but I certainly intend to keep using it.
Suggesting that girls downrate ecchi titles is absurd, by the way. Even if it were true, every genre has its opponents, and I suspect people like you would be inclined to run around downrating shoujo titles for the same reason. Has it occurred to you that the titles you've mentioned are just less-than-spectacular from an objective standpoint? Ecchi titles often eschew quality storytelling for additional panty shots. If you're looking for softcore porn, whatever, that's your own business, but you might as well just be looking at animation stills. A storytelling medium should be penalized for having lower quality storytelling than other titles. There's no reason an ecchi title can't have quality storytelling if it wants to, after all.

I rate low for manga just so whenever I accidentally stumble upon a manga that I've completed, I remember that it was so bad that I had to rate it under 4.
Then I remember not to read it 🙂
