Anime Summer Season 2016
The schedule. Well, f##k.
Amanchu! The manga started off as a well done Mono No Aware and turned into another (slightly better) K-ON-esque moeblob virginity porno within volumes. I can recommend the anime if it stops with ep.13 but not otherwise. How often have I used this line?
Arslan Senki (ARAKAWA Hiromu): Fuujin Ranbu The adaptation couldn´t wait to have enough manga to adapt, so why didn´t they just do the books instead of this compromise? The manga has more subplots, better pacing and the new show is only 8 eps. long + 1 OVA. This rushed adaptation is at least better than the incomprehensible 90s OVAs.
Berserk Look @ the confirmed episode names gang. The team appears to be doing the very 1st chapter and the next ep is Vol.18. This is catastrophic as Berserk has a Watchmen like structure. Skipping arcs will invalidate the the whole narrative. Occasional 1 min. flashbacks can´t "fix" this! Fancy 3D animation (i for one love the clips themselves, how rare is actual animation on a TV anime?) won´t save the show from being broken at the very core. I thus expect a 6-7/10 music video to go along with the manga and hope for the best. Half a "missing" series + and another "missing" half due to the abhorred films, which didn´t even get basic characterization right (!), make NO adaptation at all...
Why did Berserk adaptations peak in 1997?
Mob Psycho 100 I like ESP but the manga is pretty meh and ONE´s other "magnum opus" already left me lukewarm. I will also note that no remake manga exist here.
Bones put a lot of money into the animation but can they turn a no-budget webcomic into the Next Big Thing, without "proper" story boards to lead them. If so, then One may became the next Toriyama in the west.
Orange (TAKANO Ichigo) will probably be proclaimed as the "drama of the year", or whatever, and the Shoujo (turned Seinen) manga is a fine enough read but hardly perfect. The biggest problem is the barely there ending, which will need to be expanded.
Interesting YA romance shows are rare, so I take what I get.
Rewrite I ain´t a Key fan as most of their shows turn out to be emotionally manipulative moe-harem nonsense. Certainly better than most such offerings but you only live once.
The different Air and Angel Beats! broke that mold though and ended up being interesting enough, so i may get my 3rd B-. At least it´s not based on porn but the anime is made by no names.
Durarara!! is getting an obligatory OVA and Drifters in getting one too before the fall show. That manga has a lot untapped potential. A loose and reworked adaptation would be nice. Nothing much here, as always
The Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt ONA is getting a "restored" movie edition and Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV looks pretty promising. Advent Children Complete was one of the few good game to film adaptation, the best even but is this what it has come to?
A home release videogame tie-in is the highest profile anime film of the summer, sigh.
I ain´t gonna lie, this season is a wet piece of nothing and a potentially the worst in 3 or so years. A broken Berserk adaption may be the sole dish on my plate. Thank god for The Killing Joke, Voltron and co. See you when all had a chance to air.
@Serendipity I said season not year. I deemed Spring as perfectly fine in the last writeup and Kryptonite works the other way ;-)

Wet piece of nothing? I rather disagree. Not the best year, but far from the worst.
I am looking forward to D-gray man, that manga/Anime will always be my Kryptonite.
Edit for resi's sake: yeah I meant season...ofc
and what I meant with kryptonite is that D-gray man is my weakpoint, which is...what kryptonite is for Superman and...me being a Superwoman...
eeh never mind why am I even trying lol
Loads of fujoshit as expected. Will give 91 days and comedies a chance.

I haven't watched anime in a long, long time, but I guess I'm going to start again. Here's hoping Berserk is worth it this time.
As a side note, I didn't know Kizumonogatari was actually out, let alone that a second one was coming. It was in limbo for so long, I had given up hope. Seems like I actually need to catch up with that series now. Shinobu is too good.
Everything of interest aired, a certain pr0n shit show lost a distributor along the way (lol) and the Kumite survivors are:
91 Days 8/10 reminds me of the days when no-nonsense and "non-anime" shows, as Baccano, Master Keaton or Monster, looked like a viable endeavor. Nothing about the pilot blew me away, which is best described as a straightforward modern US mafia drama, just in anime form, and +1 for the non-animu opening credits and ED. Even my mother could comprehend this series! I predicted all plot points, the budget looks tight and I would have preferred less cutaways from the violence but I got a no-nonsense Seinen show, and what more can I ask of?
Amanchu! 7,5/10 I can only repeat what a said in my season preview. Make a 1 cour run (with a slight gecko ending) and leave the further manga alone. The material for a possible 2nd season is a frustrating Moe-crap snooze.
Arslan Senki (ARAKAWA Hiromu): Fuujin Ranbu 7/10 suffers from the same dash to rush it as the last season. How exactly was the 8 ep. run-time decided? Oh well, Tanaka´s real opus LOGH is next year and the new LOGH manga rocks.
Berserk 3/10 Read my linked Imdb review. Lord, have mercy...
How many insults does the masterful manga deserve?

Orange (TAKANO Ichigo) 7/10 is basically the manga. A fine enough tale i bothered to finish but it lacks any close. That aspect needs to be fixed and don´t expect the time slip to make any sense. The state of this decade´s romance and school life shows is such a mess, is this is one of the better entries.
Planetarian 7,5/10 It turned out that the other Key anime i barely noticed was the one with potential. The ONA was emotionally manipulative, the interesting setting seems throwaway and the designs are bland (the "Junker" is supposed to be middle aged?) but i was interested by what I saw. A short 5 part format to adapt the (apparently breezy) VA and the wholly original sequel film seem like a weird idea though.
Thunderbolt Fantasy 8,5/10 My expectations were nonexistent, neither is my respect for the Urobutcher and who cares about puppets but this mad mix works. Shockingly so! The visual and direction are phenomenal, the soundtrack is exiting, the VAs are appropriately over-the-top, the hand-puppets have a lot of personality and there is even full blown gore. Fans of high adventure PSX RPGs and Wuxia films as House of Flying Daggers need to see this. And I now hope for more puppet anime in the future. Wow. This is what I always want from the current industry, quality original anime and I got if from the strangest place possible. But dear Urobutcher , no more Psycho Pass.
Ongoing are: Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable.
Also: BoJack Horseman and Steven Universe + Teen Titans Go! (both need a coherent airing schedule).
Japan turned the disastrous looking season around, well done. I even got 2 original shows and atypical ones at that! I skip direct adaptations of martial i ain´t a die-hard fan of and "my" shows are thus: 91 Days, Berserk, Planetarian and Thunderbolt Fantasy.
WB´s The Killing Joke is lastly about to come out, and will redeem their somewhat average 2016 output. Hype!
