O.O Wow, some pretty extreme reactions on this thread... I feel almost compelled to defend Meyer simply because no one else is 🙁

I watched the Volterra interview and Meyer never claims to be a better writer than Shakespeare or Austin. Nor does she claim that Twilight is better written than the Princess Bride. She's explicitly asked by the interviewer to compare different depictions of true love in classical literature to her own depiction in Twilight, and feels that from a feminist perspective Bella is a better role-model than Buttercup. While I wouldn't necessarily agree with Meyer's analysis of the Princess Bride or consider it to be a first-rate argument (she doesn't consider the subversive potential of parody, and if I ever had a daughter the obsessive Bella is perhaps the last fictional role-model I would want her to have), it's still a legitimate answer to a question prompted by the interviewer.

Yes Meyer is a weak writer, but I'm not sure what you hope to accomplish with this bashing thread...

I'm not bashing her. I'm merely voicing my opinion on how stupid it is that her books gets such a big fandom even though they're not all that great... and how people keep comparing them to HP just because they're both well known and are fantasy.

That would work if it wasn't mentioned almost everywhere you go (Internet and in real life).

Anyway, when I first read the title of this thread, I was switching to full-on rage mode, but then when I read what Dubby typed I started laughing like crazy.

But like some people typed, Twilight will die in the next 10 or so years and it'll be quickly forgotten, along with Stephenie Meyer. That's how all things that are loved by squeeing tween/teen girls turn out (Remember when Hanson was big?)

-_-;;...

Urgh. People should learn to actually read books, especially if they're going to consider Romeo and Juliet to have a "true" love in any sense of the word- they're just a couple of naive and horny teenagers 😐 .

In any case, no, she is not better than the Bard, and she is indeed a terrible halfwit excuse for a literary writer, but even so, as Tutli pointed out, people should look at the reality of the statements rather than just looking for an excuse to bash her... it's just not worth it.

People that actually try to compare the two are IDIOTS.

Harry Potter is HUGE, from the books to the movies to all the merchandise...the fans! You don't even have to debate about the story or characters, although we know who wins there. Just mention the amount of money HP has brought in and you'll shut any twilighter up.

I guess. Whenever I go somewhere the sells books (and I do all the time) I have to see the faces of the actors from the movies on the cover of a Twilight book. Are they milking it or what? That in particular is the only thing that pisses me off when I see something Twilight related in RL. I actually bought a new moon bookmark recently, but no idea where it went. Almost 4$ for it, too. Not even sure if they marked it up. Just saying I'm no Twilight hater, but poking fun when it's so easy...is easy.

Oh, that is true. I'll have to use that the next time I hear some fangirl comparing the two.

At first I thought this was some sort of really sick joke.

I am now super upset. 😢

Twilight sucks but I let it go because she's a newbie writer and doesn't know what she's doing. But this just takes the cake. >:-(

She's had over a year to grow thick skin. The downfall with Breaking Dawn brought her more attention to her books, good for her. None of us know her personally so it's not like we could even be criticizing her for something other than what she says/writes/does.

Besides, she writes for herself and doesn't care about what the little people like you or I say. She's happy with her books. 😮

i can't understand why many people (most of them are females) love Twilight 😕
i'm a female, yet i don't think this series fascinating.
it's boring....
i think people who like twilight never know the true romance is.
I finished the first book with sleepy eyes... (yawn). Coz my best friend borrowed her books to me. It's just to appreciate her... That d*mn book made me.. didn't have any appetite to read further (the 2nd, 3rd, so on). Just skip skip skip many chapters (fast reading).
and whole stories everything about bella's thought... oh edward, edward here, edward there...

I am new, but, I have to say people blow this way, way out of the park with their reactions to every little thing. I get what both sides are saying but, neither side will admit their over reactions.

  1. its a book, they are great, they are fun, and a prefect escape. I read twilight before it was a massive huge occult following. It was a fun read. I laughed, I sighed, and I reflected with what the character went through up until breaking dawn. (since I never became a vampire or had kids, I can't really understand.) the book, did its job. It made me think of what normal people go through in a love life. the hook up, the sexual tension, the break up, the rebound, the back with your ex, and of course the typical love triangle. Take away the vampires, and warewolves, and you got a teenage romance. Needless to say, teenagers are stupid, so what do you expect reading a young adult book? Stupid Teenagers.

  2. what does it matter? she wrote the book for fun, and yet people treat it like the bible? a book of stupid teenagers and teenager mistakes? In the end, people who are offend, could be just jealous. The put someone, a normal mom, up on a high little spot in their minds, and when she messes up, she is less then dirt? It is a book, she is the writer, you don't HAVE to like it. If people think they can fuss and whine, and make her change it? if every writer did that, whats the point? that statement of 'if you don't like it rewrite it yourself' by her, is just that. Why did she even bother finishing it, if she is going to re-write it because 90% of the population says so? Take this for thought, Gone with the Wind, was made to have a second book, the writer died, so x amount of years later someone wrote it and it was approved by the association, my mother didn't like it, does that mean she has a right to demand another version done? no she doesn't. If you don't like it, don't read it. No one is forcing it on you at gun point.

i guess those two points are my major problems. People are taking this book series of stupid teenagers and their messed up love life way way way too seriously. both sides have a point, but at the same time, over react to every little thing. As a fan, you are not her friend. You're thoughts and money do mean something to her, but you can't expect if you through a stink or give her your utmost praise she is going to do jack. you can Like the book and keep supporting her, or not like the book and with drawl your support.

and i'm done lol
