I'm assuming you mean what is on American TV. But hmmm, 1990s cartoons could be better or worse depending what one loved to watch. And since the stuff is nostalgia, it could be made out to better than what it was. I don't think much of Ren and Stimpy and Beevis and Butthead but on IMDB they've been rated 8.1 (473 votes) and 7.9 (579 votes). And also there's the matter of remembering only the good stuff and forgetting the junk/pain.

I don't know if cartoons currently on TV are more about pushing toys and merchandise than they were before, or we've just grown up and know the truth of the matter. And also, maybe once one views anime, cartoons that were seen as great are now terrible in comparison, although they shouldn't be compared to each other as they can have completely different audiences.

You obviously have never seen The Fairly Oddparents. Go watch it. Im serious.

But yeah, I think most US animation is pretty crap, with stupid aimed-at-stupid-kids jokes, and poor originality (exceptuating Movies). And that includes Ren & Stimpy and Be&Butt, I just feel so sorry for all the people who likes those kind of thing.
Anyways, I remember seeing some good things. Like Johny Bravo lol, he was just so stupid yet so hilarous xD.
To tell you the truth, if I were a kid right now, the most probable thing I might be seeing is something like Power Rangers XD or of course TFO.

lol first of all Tom and Jerry has always been fucked up and secondly in my school we made this investigation on cartoon voilence. In 5min of cartoon at an average 20 cases of voilence can be seen. However my (ignorant) teacher didn't know the differance between anime and cartoon so she put in pokemon in the batch which only had one voilence scene. So it's easy to see why most american people prefer voilent games as they've been brought up liking voilence. Another point to mention is that most cartoon episodes doesn't even have a story connected between them and again it's easy to see why in the west they complain about too much talk in games like ohh..hmmm metal gear? I'm not saying that all cartoons are about voilence as ive seen a couple of episodes of fosters home for imaginary friends but ...they could at least try to make it interessting to watch for more than 2mins.

beevis & butthead and ren & stimpy are rated so high,i think, is because they were cartoon icons of the 90's much like how tom & jerry was. but even tom & jerry didnt hold out, have you seen the new movies. its like the new scooby doo movies. they took good thing and ruined them for me

&&they effed up scooby-doo. srsly. starting with the zombie island movie, I think.

Must you always curse and tell people to kill themselves?

American Animation did not go downhill, people just realized Japanese Anime is better. For crying out load, no one wants to see some middle age man wearing tights and an underwear outside, who has x-ray visions and is allergic to green rocks. [Superman]

Or some high school dude wearing a halloween custom with white stuff coming out of his wrist. Spiderman

Or some huge steroid taking green dude who got an anger issue. [Hulk]

Don't get me wrong, I loved them when I was younger, but they got corny and lame now.

American Animation was at its best between 1930 and 1950, and had another peak of goodness between 1990 and about y2k.

There's a lot of classic stuff out there that's really good. Max Fleisher, for instance, did a lot.

TV animation had a quirky renaissance after about 1990. There was the original Batman animated series (still probably the only adaptation of Batman worth watching), The Tick, Aaah Real Monsters, The Simpsons, Phantom 2040, Reboot, the list goes on. All on TV for your viewing convenience.

Between Don Bluth, Pixar, and the other "independent" animators, there were a lot of good animated movies, too. Iron Giant, All Dogs go to Heaven, and about 20 Don Bluth films among many others point out that good things were happening. Even Ralph Bakshi had an actual minor hit in "Cool World."

Where did it all go ? Profits. And Cartoon Network. It costs money to make good animation. Bad animation can be made in workstation sweatshops in third-world countries...

Here's another person who loved seeing that! I also loved seeing groups of freaks in tights fighting robots and other freaks in tights. X-men. And indeed the only Batman worth watching was the 90's incarnation.

However... With the exceptional exception of Animaniacs, I can't think of any good comedy cartoons from the 90's (the Tick was boring then, and it still is). I think that comedy cartoons have actually gotten better since the 90's, I mean, we got: Fairly Odd Parents, Johnny Bravo, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (that show has gotten MUCH better), Dave the Barbarian, Sponge Bob, and there's probably more.
