Past abuse
I'm looking for a relationship where one of the main characters has to get over some past abuse to move on in the relationship, like Aikawa from Bitter Virgin,
Kira from MARS, or Kureha from After School Nightmare.
Doesn't necessarily have to be sexual abuse, though, just something that stops them from being able to have a normal relationship at first. It's just that they were the only ones I could think of. And nothing too depressing, either!
Also, no yaoi or shonen ai, please.
And sorry about the title, way to type, eh?

yamato nadeshiko shichi henge, sunako was called ugly and whatever by a guy she confessed to and since then she's been this incredibly dark and gothic person who loves the occult and doesn't care about her appearance.

I despised it, so much so that I didn't keep the first volume, even though I got it for free. But I can see why you'd recommend it.
Ah, Yamato. Love the story, but the art makes me ill. It wasn't as bad in the anime, though...
@Deathscythe and aho: I'll try Girl Saurus, thank you, and I will beware the evil harem girls. I do generally avoid the genre as the leads tend to make me want to kill them, but this one does sound amusing. And hopefully it won't make me homicidal.
Anyone got any other suggestions, especially ones that are more serious and less comedy? Thanks to everyone who gave me some already 😁

Though they kinda fit, but kinda don't at the same time, give Ayashi no Ceres and Kagen no Tsuki a go.

Read 'em both. I agree, they kinda do and kind don't fit at the same time. They've got the creepy psychological element going for them, though, which kinda ties in...

Your lists are pretty insurmountable, so I didn't see them. 🤢

...Yeah, I really can't argue with that. I should read less manga or something.
AHAHAHA like that'd ever happen. They'll just continue to grow. Grow, my pretties, grow! (I'm not insane, what're you talking about? Not at all, not at all.)

Um, half the characters in Fruits Basket? The author's new manga Hoshi Wa Utau is also a mix of pathos and fluff. (She pulls it of reasonably well.)
Mekakushi no Kuni has a supernatural bent to the distancing, but it's there-but not such a strong part of the story.
Kare Kano also has plenty of trauma and abuse-I just can't remember how much was self inflicted.
Ouran's also got a trauma bent, but it's not quite abuse.
