Since people are talking about the new DragonBall: Evolution movie, I thought a similar discussion topic for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender movie might be in order too.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0938283/

http://tinyurl.com/clwc6n (EDIT: Hollywood Reporter link shortened)

What has me so dumbfounded is the fact that M. Night Shyamalan has put his name on it. I grant that it's too early to tell, but it appears to be heading the way of DragonBall: Evolution in its casting choices. I really have enjoyed all of Shyamalan's work, and I promised myself I'd go see anything he did, but I may have to break that promise...

And it's supposed to be a trilogy of movies? *sigh*

Anyone else care to comment (without ranting)?
Anyone looking forward to it?

M. Night Shyamalan is involved in it. It's gonna be good in the beginning, then it'll go downhill for the rest of the movie.

I hope it's good, but my hopes ain't high.

The casting choices make me raise an eyebrow. Dev Patel? For Zuko? Really? He seems far too nice. And I can't look at that face and see "emo prince"

And it might not totally be a 110% bad. Supposedly the Avatar writers are on set helping.

You better hope no Hollywood execs are lurking on here.

Fortunately, Pokemon doesn't have Nickelodeon behind it like Airbender does.

Despite what I said above, I was thinking the exact same thing.

True.
That guy will forever remain the smoked idiot from Skins for me.
And he's ugly~
I'd rather them switched the roles of Zuko and Sokka.

My thoughts and expectations?
I wouldn't pay to see it, I can tell you this much...
Why screwing up with perfectly good goody-goody animation, and make it into... No, bring it into the real world...~

waa... Liria, your long link messed up the panel. laugh

I think all of the controversy over 'racial selection' of the lead actors is just retarded.

The movie will be most successful if they have a diverse cast that can act appropriately for their roles, and if the story stays relatively true to the source material.

In my personal opinion, they should have declared that the movie would be 'based' on Avatar... Thus giving Avatar fanboys and girls no excuse to throw handfuls of crap at the movies just because they differ (and believe me, they're bound to differ) from the cartoons.

Animation rarely translates well to live-action when done without changes. The key is being able to transfer the feel and idea of the original story into a different format. Fans don't understand this, and producers often times ignore it. However, race has little to do with keeping the idea of the first movie - unless.. say.. in the cartoons - the fire, water, earth, and air nations all looked extremely different (and thus should be separated by some sort of racial differences in a live-action.)

So in summary: People should be far more worried about how they will set up the story than about who they're casting for characters.

I'm not sure if all of you have heard but i'll post it here:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-03-09/new-hollyw ood-company-acquiring-manga-remake-rights

I'm really curious of what they are going to make, i bet 50% will be romance so 20-30 Mln Gold is probably more than enough

lol i think the movies these days are getting weirder since they grab it from cartoon and stuffs. Secondly i dont mind if they chose the character actor not using racial selection but at the very least try to pick someone who can fit the role. like street fighter:legend of chun li...why they cast the smallville girl to be chunli is kinda dumb since the name depicts she have to speak cantonese.

and m night doing a cartoon adaption seems to me like a failed project since he is mostly a horror and suspense, somewhat like john woo doing the first hulk = fail.

I'm looking forward to it because I adore A:TLA but in the same breath I'd rather not see a crappy ATLA adaptation. I don't put much faith in Night Shyamalan, and Mike and Bryan have only failed me a couple of times and overall they're awesome people.

Anyway, I didn't know they had got started on the movie, I remember hearing about it a couple of years ago then nothing.

On the actors so far
lol sokka is jackson rathborne, i guess that could work. I don't think I've ever seen him act but whatever. XD

I'm kinda weirded out that Zuko is darker than Sokka but I care not, I've never seen skins so I... it doesn't matter. (and besides looking kinda on the young side I think he's cute.)

i'll be truthful i think diffrent skintones in the movie would be nice. (cough looking pale there sokka/katara cough) but i'm not holding out. I know someone was arguing a couple years back they should all be asian. I really wouldn't care for that because that just makes it no fun. Not that I think the cast should all white either. D: It would be awesome if someone black was in there, mostly because nice to see someone from the same race as you. And before there were no black people in avatar thing. it doesn't matter, the skin tones in the show ranged and if you get someone pale to play Sokka why not mess with other skin tones as well. :/

this post is way disjointed kind of like my thoughts on the movie

-----
who would you like to see in the movie?
I'd like to see
Azula (does anyone remember when everyone was calling her 'Zula' because we didn't know her name. Oh good times)
Song, Yue + sokka's other chicks, Toph (of course), Zhao <3

i have the need to fangirl now

I don't consider Shyamalan to be solely a horror/suspense/thriller director. That's the direction his more well-known works have taken, but that's not all he can do. So him dipping into this genre isn't a concern. It's him dipping into someone else's playground (the Avatar world) that's more of a concern, in my mind.

The screenplay will play a big part of what direction Shyamalan takes as a director, so that's my main concern. I suspect it will either be really good or really bad depending on who's done their homework.

And yeah, I am a bit skeptical of casting choices this early on without having seen anything more. Trailers will help with that some, probably.

@Swan - edited the first url into a tinyURL. Hope that helps.

u kno what.... I BEG TO DIFFER...i think Mr. M. Night Shamalamalamal-blah cound pull it off. He allready know how to do a twist at the end of a movie(about every singe dam one he does) this time all he has to do is not reveal ne thing at the end...and keep it going for 2 more movies and it's a success!...the third one is gonna suck tho...i can jsut alllready feel it
