Influencing others (family?) to read Manga? Triumph or tragedy?

( skip to last paragraph for the question and answer bit to avoid reading the long winded bit)
Around an hour ago my youngest bro came in, announced he was bored (chronically it seems) so I handed him the first volume (with sever warnings about handling ^ ^) of xXxHolic. I read the first chapters aloud to him so that he could understand the flow and layout of the panels but my intention was merely to drive him out and have a little out-loud babbling fun about manga-things (mostly stuff I already know is okay for kids).
Now, he's reading it on his own 😲 . This is the kid you have to nearly drag behind a horse to get to even glance at a cover of a book, so on one hand it's good to get him reading but on the other hand... with manga you can never really guess how far things will go in terms of age-appropriateness... I feel like I've just given myself another beat to police (as a big sister, so to speak). 🤢 gah.
So now : have you influenced a friend or family member into reading manga? How so (which manga or genre?) and have there been any regrets or worries? The good, the bad or the unsightly and mind-breakingly uncomfortable? 😕
Curious.

Tragedy. My family can't get their head around the idea that a 'comic' can be in-depth, adult and entertaining. Neither of my siblings are big on reading, and our tastes are really different so, despite my attempts to prove othewise, they remain convinced that manga is some strange remnant of my teenage years. My Dad has a better understanding, and has read a few himself in his time, but not enough for me to have discussion with him about it. My mum just sees it as another way I'm obsessed with Japan.
I have one friend who also reads manga, but nowhere near as much as I do. My other friends think it's weird, but accept that my being weird is a natural thing. Since coming to Japan I have a new friend who is also manga obsessed, yay! But she was like that when I met her, so I can't take any credit. I have introduced her to new manga though and vice versa, so that kinda counts.
All in all, my attempts were an epic failure.
The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.
I got my friend into manga, but he was already way into anime so it wasn't a big step or anything.
Sometimes I think about the series I'd recommend if I were to introduce somebody to manga. The list is pretty small. Out of the 44 series I own, I'd only recommend 5 or 6 to a beginner. If they're already familiar with anime the list would grow quite a bit though.

I've been lending my collection to friends for quite some time now.
And since yesterday, my brother has been borrowing some of my shoujo.
My only worries are about damaging them.
My bro has damaged one of the covers. My mother did it too. ahhh..nnoying 🙁
Oh no, I could never convince any of my family to read manga. They're not into that sort of thing at all. I've made them aware of the anime and manga world but that's about it.
My mum hates that I've spent so much on manga, but she blames herself for getting me into it when she bought me a 'How to draw manga' book oh so many years ago, so she accepts the fact that this was inevitable 🤣
I've managed to get friends to try out some manga, but I'd never bother with my family. They're free to borrow all the manga I have on my shelf but they've never asked. They're just not interested XD

not really influencing. my parents think bad about my excessive manga reading and my sisters are more into korean dramas. one of my sisters have friends that read manga so sometimes she read too. i do recommend mangas similar to what she's reading.
Never again tried to influence my friends to read manga. Side effect: my manga collections got damage (light, medium, severe).. and got some volumes lost/never returned, which pissed me off.
When i do Online Reading, some friends only followed Naruto/Bleach, but they already read it.. not my influence. And the rest of them are friends who read shoujo but can't read in english and friends who aren't interested in manga at all. Anyway, i'm proud to be different.

Both of my older sons (15 years old) read manga, but they're not as into it as I am; my youngest is 3 so not really old enough yet but I'm certainly planning to let/help him read it when he's old enough.
My mom has read some Yotsubato! but though it doesn't bother her that we read manga she's just not particularly interested in it. My brother loans me manga sometimes but it's usually random volumes of random series that he's found at yard sales or something; he's also not at into manga as I am.

only give them age appropriate ones. How old is he?
I let my twin read my manga when he was bored one day. He read Redrum 327 which he liked but I doubt he'll read manga again. Just doesn't really interest him. He's watched a few anime as an adult (we watched gundam/tenchi when reminiscing about childhood) and he works as some type of computer analyst and the people he works with like it so he'll watch with them. No worries though because he won't actually bother with it himself.
I did influence my mom to watch asian dramas though, she loves them more than me. I can now talk smack about the characters with someone. It's perfect.

I translated some Yotsubato for my mother once.
She seemed to like it, but she doesn't handle computers or fiction reading material.
With my family, I never actually tried to get them into manga.
I have with anime, but thus far have sustained only loses.
I'm pretty tired of people going on about age appropriate.
Here or anywhere.
Do you think your children/siblings/relatives/etc' are that innocent?
That they haven't already been exposed to all the things you're trying to 'protect' them from, or would have been soon enough?
I'm not telling you to shove hentai up their throats, but chances are they'll stray away from the more mature stuff on their own. It's a matter of interest levels.
And if they don't... Jeez, what's gonna happen?

Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

um i was pretty scandalized reading manga. maybe you weren't innocent doesn't mean everyone else wasn't.
just because you don't care, doesn't mean we all want to corrupt children. I work with kids and i'd like them to keep their innocence. I see way too much craziness

He's going on 13 in a few months, so not exactly little (there's nearly a decade in difference between us though and he's the baby of the family too boot) but it's specifically violent sexual images I'm worried about. On the whole though it would be nice to talk with someone not behind a screen about a series... then again... I doubt he'll want too 🤢
It could all be a ruse to get out reading the other books... I would not put that past him.
