New Poll - What's Your Gender?

Fandom commitment, vote-splitting, type of ppl using MU and how there's more (um, 1.6%+) girls than guys definitely contributed to yaoi winning, (doesn't mean I'm not a little bit happy). I'm just surprised at how... well, bitter, some of the guys are o_O Hey, it's cool if you're a yaoi-hater, I believe in expressing your likes/dislikes and all, but don't go attacking homosexuality as a behaviour or how fangirls are to be feared (though we can be pretty scary) or made a joke of; i.e. derogative comments about how it's 'disgusting' without a reason other than that it disgusts you. Cause that's a bit over the line I guess.
Aaaaanyway, for some yaoi-reading girls (the scary teenage ones who're usually 15-18, single) who are freaked when initially faced with their gender roles and seeing a female character in a compromised situation yaoi is just good ol' hentai with more substantial plot; so they think if the one in the 'bottom' situation is a guy, it's okay - i know, girls can be a little sexist sometimes too ;x so that explains why guys don't like it - it gives their masculinity a big hit, especially those who're insecure about it, huh? Plus, not everybody likes p0rn, let alone of something so different to some.
I won't go into psychoanalysing why people are homophobic 'cause that's touching on a sensitive topic (and to some 'sarcastic' commentor above: that's not only fear in the clinical sense, it's opposition/hatred in general which you clearly showed) Just to spare you all the agony 😉 "Thank god," you all say.
But hey, then again there's just the good old reason of 'two hotties is better than one', heh. For a lot of mature yaoi readers it's just appreciation for a good (sexy), albeit idealised homosexual relationship. And to be honest, I think a lot of the yaoi mangaka's style is just a lot more pleasing to the eye generally, not just talking about the sex.
Anyway I do think fangirls = pervs xD Takes one to know one. As for myself, I selectively read (a lot of) yaoi, I read some shounen as well but largely based on how many bishies are in it, (hey you need that occasional eyecandy afterall ;P) but generally if the plot's good it goes. Guess i am that shallow.
Sorry, for someone who never posts, I sure said a lot; but it's an interesting thread.

Haha. Probably. But not all girls... some are anti-yaoi too. Speaking for myself I love smutty yaoi, even the ones that are purely PWP. But if I read too much of that I'll probably be so desensitised there'll be no point? I need the balance between plot and smut, I guess.
Um, do you mean you're secured about your 'sexuality' instead of homosexuality? xD completely different meaning, dude.
Hmm, I find it interesting that some girls think they're open-minded just because they read Yaoi? ... I can't seem to see the connection.
You read Yaoi because you like it. No need to defend it by saying that the other person is not open-minded and homophobic. That's as silly as saying that prebuscent boys support (female) homosexuality because they jerk off to lesbian porn.
(I'm not implying that girls masturbate to Yaoi or something... ; 😉
And honestly, I get the appeal of the whole two members of the opposite sex kissing eachother and all. But most girls that read Yaoi make it seem as if it is their oxygen. I like the girls that read Yaoi - but don't mention that fact a lot - proportionally more. I'd prefer hetero couples/stories, because in that way I can identify myself with the male person.

Lol, I wonder why Yaoi readers always judge the other person (that doesn't like Yaoi) as homophobic... Talk about close-minded.
And sorry, this is in no way a personal attack. That behaviour just seems irrational to me.

Hey, good point you raised there, it does happen, the rabid fans are, well, rabid.
Though i must say that the people that fangirls (the ones I've seen, at least, can't speak for all) label as homophobic usually DID make biting comments about homosexuality, and not just that "I don't like yaoi". Doesn't make all of us judgemental since it's true...? If you get my drift. Us fangirls are generally harmless unless we're faced with unkind comments. We react like any normal person would.
No, reading yaoi doesn't make you open-minded or pro-gay or anything, it's just a preference. I completely agree that there's no connection (apparently a theory is that some girls could even be homophobic even if they read yaoi - it's different with an idealistic storyline etc, and far removed from real life so it satisfies their curiosity without being offensive to them, because I did know someone who read yaoi, said it's great, but real life guys getting it on is just "sick and they're probably going to hell" - that I put down as homophobic)... But on the other hand comments attacking the idea of homosexuality itself, and not just yaoi, link you at least somewhat to being anti-gay; and hey, we're all a little defensive about what we like, I guess, and will definitely get offended if there's a totally uncalled-for, insensitive remark ;P
And um, shameless and perverted as it is, most of us do love yaoi for what it is - pure lovely mansex, and aren't afraid to admit it... I don't like girls who parade around in real life and scare their friends off by trying to 'convert' them either, of course - but when it's the internet the anonymity allows a lot more room for an open discussion which is what we're hoping for. We just want to talk about loving yaoi like how others talk about loving shoujo or hentai etc, and not be blatantly judged by it ;D
So I guess I understand why guys (and some girls too I think?) like hentai/ecchi - sex sells after all, for guys and girls. I however don't see much appeal in that or even shoujo that has the whole damsel in distress cliche, maybe I'm just a tad feminist or something... doesn't mean I would say things about the people who like them. IMO you're free to love or hate whatever you want, just as long as you at least respect others' likes and dislikes too, even if you disagree.
Eek, keep having ridiculously long posts, but I do ramble.

polls are polls and its like its the most accurate thing ever. some fans might have not voted, and some who are overly eager prob voted the most (in this case yaoi fans?). its not like u can point a gun to every person's head and make them vote here.
i voted for josei but im not surprised with the decision? i dont get the genre splitting issue since u only choose which one u think outweighed the other in polling purposes. in my case i voted josei for shoujo because i knew more people would vote for shojo.

Actually, you're probably talking about much of the younger fans. The older ones prefer to carry on with their lives(lurking around) and not say much about BL. 🙂 I guess they prefer to speak with their support instead.

You know what I like? When some people make baseless accusations just because I used the word "disgusting". Some just don't seem to understand that, on the internet, we lack tone, and that things can be easily misinterpreted. This means you shouldn't jump to conclusions.
I'm not a homophobe, nor am I anti-gay in any way. I'm... wait, is there a term for someone who finds the act of inserting one's member into the rectum of another man a little bit gross? "Heterosexual male"? Yeah, I'm that. No, really, you'd be hard pressed to find many straight guys who find the actual act of gay sex to be an appealing thing to imagine, let alone view.
This doesn't make me homophobic, nor anti-gay. I also don't like to watch animals have sex. Do you? Doubtful. See, as long as gay dudes don't give me graphic descriptions of their sex lives(and thankfully, none do), then they're okay by me.
God, you know, I really hate going on the defensive, because it's usually a waste of time. Though, I guess I just take some satisfaction in pointing out how wrong people are when they try to judge me.
Anyways, this is silly, I don't feel like starting a war with anyone. But to zaptail, and elfee, and whoever else wants to get on my case, go read my post again, without trying to defend your interests by attacking me. I have nothing against Yaoi(nor (most of)its fans), nor homosexuality in general. I simply find it visually unappealing. And, I've every right to that opinion, thanks.
P.S., and to whomsoever commented on the "fat girl joke" bit, note that I didn't even make such a joke, so as to avoid offending people. I just pointed out how perfectly my previous sentence would've set me up for one. Have a sense of humour, people.

Actually, do you think since there is so much yaoi in comparison to just homosexual writings, and that's why the people that like that stuff flock to yaoi? And there is no real investment with yaoi since it's probably just skipping characterization (I hear lots of the yaoi stuff released for the Releases page is oneshot or very short stuff) and watching the guys getting it on.
