my memmory of dbz aint all that clear but on gantz....he died, then was brought back to life 10secs. later.....so he was always the main character

atleast untill he died again

What sucks me in is:
-Cool looking mechas (usually anime only).

-For shoujos:
~Big shiny eyes and bishounens all over the place
~A heroine who's not mentally challenged or thinks the world is full of happiness and love (classic shoujo candy girl)

-Don't get the wrong idea but when blood spills everywhere, my eyes glue to the screen..

The person who made it, the possibility of romance, lovely/cute art, things that will me laugh, the characters.....those are the things that attract me to manga/anime.

I think for me it's shoujo where the two destined people are in love with each other but they either don't know it or deny it. And then they go through obstacle that either prevent them from confessing or find a place where they are both comfortable with each other and everything.
And I really like it when the male character goes through some sort of hardship to gain the ability to love or the female characters heart.
