If we talk about YOSHIHARA Yuki and any works related to a powerful/deep one-shot... I think that Kizuato, the 5th story from Sheet no Sukima, deserves an honorable mention. I thought that I was going to read more of the usual light-hearted sex comedies, but nooooooo... this one took me by surprise and let a couple of tears drop. But before anyone starts this, a warning: NSFW.

the crow, girl and yakuza belong to hiroki endo tapenshuu. have you read the others chapters on it? they're all oneshots, and as deep as that title mentioned. well, he is the one who writes eden: the endless world.

Quote from Yenoh

Akazukin to Yasashii Ookami

Best one in this thread.

The rest: exit is that way -->

Well, you're not wrong, but Yenoh had a couple solid choices, and I believe City in the Sea and Hotarubi no Mori e were also mentioned.

My personal pick is "Tokyo" from the collection Sekai no Owari to Yoakemae. There are several other good stories in the collection, but none of them are quite as elegantly told, and it probably does have the best illustrations as well (there are two pages in particular which you will know when you see.) In my mind, what a good emotional, rather than philosophical, short story needs to have is a sense of fragility; a sense that ultimately you're being given a glimpse into something real, but still something that you can't quite reach out and touch. I know that I'm not articulating this as well as I should be, but that's just sort of how I see things. I generally manage to glean that kind of feeling from Asano's work, so as always, I recommend him on the whole, though he certainly does do well-constructed philosophical pieces as well.

It's also worth looking at Dirty Work.

NightSwan also said that she wanted to peg me, once, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a threat...
