I think the reason why you find more yaoi then yuri is there are a lot of girls reading these mangas. Most of the sites i saw a few months ago where in fact mostly for girls (I went to a lot of sites not just shoujo ones). Many of the shounen books I found where also read by a lot of girls too. If it's what people want thats what they get. I myself as a girl doesn't really want to read yuri or shoujo-ai (sorry not a real fan) but I like the other kind like shounen, seinen, shoujo, yaoi, and shounen-ai. If there is a larger crowd demanding shoujo-ai and yuri male or female then there will be more sites for it but right now it's all about the boy love (kinda sad but happy where's the shounen love?).

It'd be interesting to know the gender representation of this site, or of the manga readership in general in the western world.

Maybe compare it with the Anime representation too.

I always thought we were like 65/35% Boy/Girl here, but given the flood of Yaoi releases, I'm either wrong or that 35% is really actively reading

There are some more popular shounen series that a lot of male readers are into, but it seems like the overall percentage of series are shoujo or yaoi. So, if you only read shounen, and you see the immense popularity that some of the shounen titles get, you might miss all of the other smaller things that the majority of other people read.

Indeed, I forgot about that aspect: shounen series tend to be insanely long, so the readership will likely more focused on a smaller title pool.

I personally can't read action: it has to be animated, so I end up in Shoujo most of the time (angst/romance is better read than seen imo, Fushigi Yuugi showed me that). I try to avoid the smut most of the time though 😲

Ecchi is good in every form 😛 (women that is...)

Doki Doki does do a lot of things, and the yuri is very clearly marked on their projects page, so you won't find anything you don't want to see. 😀

I attribute the recent boom in yaoi scanlations with the dedication of the fans. If you can find a translator, a group will spring up around that translator, because lots of girls have copies of yaoi in original Japanese, and girls will teach themselves Photoshop to edit the manga. Often groups beg for translators, because everything else is (more or less) easily obtainable. And these groups are fairly strict as well; some have a once-a-week release policy, while others release in bulk, but they tend to be fairly regular.

Additionally, it's easier for fangirls to get in contact as well with websites like Livejournal and such. There are HUGE communities for yaoi lovers, but the yuri communities don't tend to be nearly as big (though there is a community: http://community.livejournal.com/yuri/profile

Of course, it's counterpart yaoi_daily has over 12,000 members... 😀 😀

Exactly, it's all a matter of demand. Looking at how often yaoi_daily is posted in and how many comments many entries get in a day gives you a small glimpse of how many girls out there are interested in yaoi.

I was one of those girls who taught myself photoshop and was doing editing/cleaning for a while because I had been reading for so long and felt like giving back to the community.

Pretty much every group is always looking for more translators and if there's a translator who wants to do yaoi then that's what gets done.

If you want to go with a more "real" lesbian manga, try Kotonoha's Free Soul, and Love My Life. There's also another one named Sweet Blue Flower (I think) but it's supposedly on hold.

All those are aviable at http://www.lililicious.net/ 😀 . I liked 'em. Not typical mangaish (however manga = comic so who cares?)

Okay now let's see
A yaoi is usually one chapter. --counts as one series
A series is more chapters. ---still counts as one series.
So of course there's a lot of yaoi, there'd be a lot of other series if they were counted on chapters and not on genres. So for example, just Shaman King and One Piece together have around 600-700 chapters. That counts for 700 yaoi series, which obviously seems far more. And those are just two series. See my point? 😛

Yuri isn't as common as yaoi because (I think...) men prefer hentai more (...you know why) and real porn. And the sweet girlxgirl romances lilicious does obviously don't fit the tastes of men. The minority is you, the guys who want more yuri 😛

Think about all the genres that have been focused on in the past and the fact that there is now a boost in the yaoi scanlation groups as well as new comers (like me) and you get the sudden release craze. Like everything, it probably will level out in the future but right now those who are in love with it are glad that there is the large availability of these mangas. To quote Reppu "there's not enough of it"!!!

blah blah blah

basically I just am a yaoi lover agreeing with my fellow yaoi-ers
