There's a reason that only two industrialized countries still practice it. Even if we look at things from a far more basic perspective, it's exceedingly expensive even if there isn't a moral quandary. I'd rather my tax dollars go to public programs than a decade or longer legal process that, in actuality, is more expensive than just leaving the convict alive.
