Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever found that self-taught self-defense actually works?

I know basic karate (4 years worth, anyway), and have some experience sword fighting with friends (yes, with real, sharp weapons. Yes, we're idiots). Besides that I carry a knife with me at all times for the sake of it (within legal limits for concealed weaponry, although I suppose my age overrules that already). That and the fact that I'm 6'2", male, and in decent shape should be enough, since that theoretically rules me out as an easy target.

edit: I also remember taking a 3-day course because of the school's regulations. It was only 2 or 3 techniques that could help you get away from an attacker though, nothing actually damaging. The girls learned a death blow though (just a finger strike to the throat, I think), they said that boys were "too likely to use it will rough-housing to be responsibly taught".

Karate, training and books.
La savate, training.

Typical self-defence? Hmm, I tried to learn Krav Maga ( yeah I know it's a kinda brutal self-defence discipline laugh ) from a book, but I'm trying to get in touch with a Krav Maga instructor, to practice.

Oh and I tried to learn sth from books written by Michael. D.Echanis. Creep against knives... laugh

It does, I beat up my brother everytime and he's ten years older

I took classes when I was like 7. But aside from that all my self defense knowledge comes from television.

Im also very willing to use pretty much any and every object I can find to fight off anyone who would attack me, from a pencil to a lamp.

I taught myself I guess...

Though i'm sure if I can really use it when i'm scared as hell.
But when i'm fighting my brothers, I know some good fast moves =).
This one time, I was fighting my brother (5"1 azn female vs. 5"5 azn male mind you), and for some odd reason, I just took a step and totally did a push palm attack against his heart. He went down like a flan in a cupboard xDD. That'll teach him to eat my McDonald's. >=I

well i took Karate when i was younger though i didnt stick with it so i know the basics

also i watch a lot of UFC stuff on TV and also saw something pretty interesting on Manswers on Spike TV that kinda tough me some moves and reading some Histories Strongest Desciple (though im probably no good at em when it comes to the real thing) ive tried some of these moves on my brother who is 100lbs heavier than me and they seem to work though be both know neither of us were actually serious when fighting eachother so im not quite sure how good i am at it but im pretty sure i can hold my on against some one who has not actually taken ne classes on it and doesnt have a weapon. though i do plan later on to go to an actual class i just havent had the time due to school

None of the options really fit for me.

I know some *principles* of self-defense and a few basic moves, some of which I've tried out messing around with friends & my kids, but it's just stuff I've picked up here & there, never taken a class.

I should probably choose "no need to" since I live in a safe town (seriously, there is no "bad part of town" here). Even when I've been in not-so-safe places I've never had any problems - I've heard that when I'm serious I look "intimidating"; being tall is probably part of that, as is walking like I know exactly where I'm going & how to get there.

Well, I take classes, BUT
I did know how to mutilate my
opponent even before that.
Now they are more likely to remain
alive after encountering me. laugh

learning from books and stuff dont really help since you dont build muscle memory and thinking during a fight is a big no no heres a feature of my school http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/15/nyregion/15melee.html?_r=1& oref=slogin
