I am both self taught and a traditional martial artist so I guess you could say that I can defend myself
However most self defense is just repetition until you are prepared for that type of situation, so it doesn't matter if you are self taught or a hardcore practitioner how you defend yourself is 50-50 even. How you are mentally prepared for the situation so that you know what to do when that situation arises, and being physically(also muscle memory) fit to perform your action with the best result

What kind of school did you train at? eek
There's no way it would be 50-50 in my case. I've done too much unset self-defence in martial arts classes, against people who already know how to avoid typical movements, are braced well for hits, etc. The only set work I do is for testing and demonstration.

I'm confident in my ability to protect myself, and hopefully without causing lasting damage to the other person.

I am not one to panic, have good reflexes, and never flinch if someone tries to hit me.
That being said, the last time someone tried to attack me I chose flight over fight. Having good judgement is also important.

First off I'll say that submissions are not meant for self defense!!!!

Most of the time in which you need to defend yourself on the streets it will be 1vsmany. So even if you manage to grapple someone by the time you make him give the others will kill you.

I only had one fight in my life and I don't know how good I am at fighting back seeing as all I did was cross my hands, clench my jaw and stand there while getting hit from 6 different sides...

But, I'm tall and even though I don't workout I have a lot of strength, so most people move from my way and none ever messed with me.

yes, I'm a martial artist in a Jeet Kune Do class.
I am a green belt currently

THE ROSTER:
White
Green-Stripe
Green
Brown-Stripe
Brown
Black-Stripe
Black (1-8 Dan)

it takes a few years to get up even 1 rank, that why I'm so low.
but most of our dojo's green belts could take on other dojo's black belts and still have a decent fight.
but this is because we take importance off rank and put it on performance, all belts learn the same things and we star with basics and work our way up to the fun stuff.

out class takes most of our style from Jeet Kune Do, Judo, Iaido, Jiu-Jitsu, etc.

Self defence arts (krav maga and such) are good for people who just want to practice a bit to be able to defend her/himself. If you do some combat sports like boxing or judo, it's always easier to defend yourself.

But I'd say that if you're willing to spend time to train, then the best would be ancient Chinese martial arts like Xingyiquan, since they have a military history. Their purpose is to be able to survive no matter how many opponents (1 enemy 1 hit) until you pass out from exhaustion or there's no one left. The idea is that no matter how many enemies, unless you're the last standing you're going to die.

But these days there's little use for such skills. Even with boxing or judo (which are one on one) is enough for you to survive. In the worst case you might get 5-10 guys attack you, and even if some of them have some martial arts experience the most are just total amateurs and they just rely on their numbers.

Terpsichore how would you classify it? I just see it as equal parts mental and physical granted it may be 60/40 mental to physical but without a physical capability to perform such actions the mental understanding means nothing

I don't know if I would classify it. I think it is more important to have brains and the ability to think quickly and adapt. It also takes brains to be determined in practice and to ask questions constantly and to always be eager to learn...
Physical stamina is more important than strength. It takes very little effort to take someone down if you know how to use your own abilities to your advantage. (I'm very small, so I must adapt to the fact that I have little weight on my side to support me, for instance).

Don't most martial arts have some kind of military history, at some point or another?

Wrestling is the most ancient of all martial arts.

No.

Relation to wars of course, since that's why there is martial arts.

A little of both. I took several years of martial arts, but I also taught myself a lot.
