Just found the perfect example of democracy and letting stupid people vote:
http://www.geekologie.com/2010/10/iliterate_clown_voted_into_bra.php

Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, a 45-year old illiterate Brazilian man best known for his portrayal of Tiririca the clown, just won a place in Brazilian Congress with more than 2x the votes as the next closest candidate. JOKES: YES WE CAN.

Tiririca caught the attention of disillusioned voters by asking for their support with the humorous slogan: "It can't get any worse" and a promise to do nothing more in Congress than report back to them on how politicians spend their time.

"What does a congressman do? The truth is I don't know, but vote for me and I'll tell you," the 45-year-old said in his campaign advertisements.

Even they don't. No country on earth practices true Athenian democracy. There are only a handful of nominally independent nations whose population isn't too large to make an Athenian democracy too unwieldy and unmanageable.

Earlier in this thread I believe it was the OP who was talking about how it took too long to actually pass any legislation. Imagine trying to pass legislation when every citizen had to vote on it.

If EVERY measure and law requires direct voting then yes, there would be literally years of backlog on processing measure, law, proposition, election ballots.

The major ones such as propositions can be directly voted on, at least that's the way we do it here in California.

To a degree yes, i can opnly look at my own coutry since i know how it works here best. people are prepared to destroy evertyhing for few more dollars in tax cuts, In a democracy greed wins and to hell with humanism, tolerance and solidarity

He means overrated by the fact that living under a communist rule and living under a democratic rule has virtually no impact on his life except taxes. When it comes down to it, communism and democracy aren't that bad, it's just corruption that makes them bad and because communism holds more power to the ruling party, they are more likely to become corrupt. But face it, who here hasn't heard of a corrupt politician in a democratic system?

In the end, I'd rather enjoy a mixed system where the general government is democratic but a lot of the services are socialist, such as health care. The privatization of such systems only lead to the abuse of the people who need them the most.

BTW, communists are a bit too offensive in their generalization of democracy and those for democracy are a bit too fearful of a communist world. Like someone mentioned before, this is not the cold war.

I'm surprised that there are people who still think that the US is a democracy. Read the Constitution. It's not one, and it was never meant to be. That's probably a good thing, as I can't imagine a political system that could possibly be worse than democracy.

is it?

I lived in china I lived in canada, frankly I feel the same.

except I pay way more taxes here like 40 percent on income another 12 on everything else so that's 52 percent gone.

As for voting, I don't do it. The canada government is a joke it takes month to pass something, and by the time the action is taken the problem would have been over.

Freedom of speech?! What a lie, I say anything to anybody it's offensive. Nobody can talk about wat they think anymore, it's all generic, hi how are you good wat about you.

In china the taxes are lower and no tax on everyday items. Also the chinese are not as sensitive as the damn North Americans.

If its about democracy, I would say its not overated since democracy is the best system that human has used so far. Other system than this, too many flaws in it.
If you have problem with democracy, you can try create new system that can beat democracy....

Btw, I think your issues is not with democracy its more to canada system right. I don't know about canada or china system, so no comment on that.

You got it dead wrong... Democrazy has a fucking lot of flaws

Monarchy sucks because inbreed and unatural selection (after a few generations all leaders are batshit crazy)
Well I lack time so in simple terms

Tyranny/Dictatorship are the only 2 types of government that have no inherent flaws, is the ruler the one that has flaws...

Democrazy in theory sounds awesome, but in reality sucks balls... Democrazy stops evolution of society, since everything is viewed by popularity, important and revolutionary ideas get shut down, and the stupid and mindless have a say...

Really Tyranny is the way to go

One guy takes all the important decisions (and odds say if he managed to get into that situation then he/she is very resourceful and/or has a great team backing him), whatever the ruler thinks is important will get researched and for god Christ, a smart Tyrant will keep the masses happy or at least NOT unhappy, since Revolt is always a threat.

Really there is no better government, a guy/gal is the ruler of life... but if he/she sucks, then his/her life will be in constant danger of the rabid masses.

Everyone wins

lol thank god i believe it was only me thinking one ruler wasn't such a crazy thing.
