Culture Q&A - A thread dedicated to asking questions and answering of different cultures.
Questions about Japanese culture, American, Other countries, things in the past (I'm sure someone here must be an expect ).

Seeing as the random question thread is for quick Q&A's and a topic like this would be more detailed, and have more responses. I think a thread about culture would be nice.

If you could please put your question in bold, then explain what you don't understand.
Example
How is ___ like in this country- other stuff explaining what you don't understand.

Also when answering a question please quote the question you are answering.
Example

Quote from whoever asked the question

How is ___ like in this country- other stuff explaining what you don't understand.

Is like this _____

How does a family registry work in Japan? - I'm guessing there's no way for gay people to get married in Japan, so one of them would adopt the other and that's there marriage? ... Follow up for this would be if a gay couple went to a different country to get married would they then be able to add the person to the family registry?
Why is a family registry so important in Japan?
Ummm the whole thing kind of confuses me ...

How is it legal to marry your cousin in Japan?-I'm not really sure if it is legal, I'm just being assumptious because of some mangas that I read..
Well, it is legal in many places...

Okay I'm not sure in Japan about the cousins allowed to marry thing. ( I heard about it too, and that it's okay for first cousins to marry, but again unsure)

  • I do know that in the USA you can legally marry your second cousin in any state. In some states you can marry your first cousin, but there's restrictions for that. ( Like one of you would have to get a producer so you can't have kids, or if you're only half cousins. It varies.).

It is allowed in Japan though that number is pretty slim. I can't quote anything but if you want to google for a copy of Japan's civil laws you might locate the source. I believe there are English versions of Japan's laws. This I know just from prior research.
