And of course I've seen Kannazuki no Miko. It's a real favorite of mine even though it is a seriously flawed show.

Now I'm officially wondering how can you also have enjoyed something like Mai-HiME...

What are you talking about? The Mai-HiME anime is great (i'd honestly list it as one of the best anime I've seen). Wonderful characters, action, humor, hot chicks, tons of shoujo-ai subtext (and some actual context). The ending largely kills a lot of the drama in the long run but I'm mostly willing to look past that since almost everything before that is great.

Kannazuki no Miko's action sequence uniformly suck pretty much. There's bad transitioning and choppy animation. All the characters aside from the leads are painfully uninspired. To top it all off the story aside from the romantic drama is really not that good. I'm willing to admit all of that and yet still call myself a fan of the show.

Another suggestion that I just thought is Shina Dark. It's definitely too early to give a judgement about it, but it looks promising. There is a male lead, but it's almost a secondary character in comparison to the girls (well I know I'm a little contradictory, but it's not easy to explain it). And it also could gain points 'cause it doesn't look like an harem imho (despite the tag 😛 ).
Nagasarete Airantou could also fit. But if you think that Negima is loli, so is this one (and I also didn't read more than 2 vol so I can't really say where the story is going to).

Thanks for more suggestions. I'll definitely take a look at Shina Dark. Looks pretty good.

Yeah, I've hear Negima's an all right manga series (though very loli and kinda harem-ish). Unfortunately I made the grave mistake of watching the anime adaptation, so I'm naturally a little hesitant to pick up the manga.

Don't worry, that was one of the worst anime adaption, the manga is totally different and it's not so loli as one could think (though it's really harem-ish imho).

If you also watch anime maybe you can try "Kannatsuki no Miko"

lol Walrothetacoking, I know what you mean. I had high expectations of the first anime when Mahou Sensei Negima did come on, I was, needless to say, disappointed. The "Negima!" anime (which was actually much better) is closer to the manga than the first one.

... but yes, the manga is actually vastly different in terms of virtually everything, and I'd highly recommend it.

Shina Dark doesn't really rely on "one" strong "main character" so to speak, because the main character is misleading, but as reid1 said, it's too early to impose judgment. The plot itself is progressing very well, so it a good read.

...What? The second adaptation is based on an entirely different spinoff manga (Negima!?), and shares very little in common with the original other than the characters.

But yes, the original manga is better than both adaptations, once it actually gets going. Much better. In fact, it's almost like they're totally unrelated (but then again, the anime is so terrible that I could say that about just about anything).

Try some Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge. It should fit, and with only a couple chapters out so far, you really have nothing to lose.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just read what's been scanned so far (since it was only four chapters). It's a very amusing series so far.

And what's the point to create such a cliffhanger drama if you're going to destroy it at last with a ultra-naive ending? If you want to make a children's story the ending is ok, but if you give me the impression for 25 episodes that it'll be a "mature" story you can't come up with a conclusion like that. What Berserk fans will think of it if at the end everyone will be resurrected? I'm sorry, I'll remember it as the anime with the worst ending ever (even worst than Mahoromatic and that really sucked).

I really hope that this manga will go to the tragedy/drama 'cause the elements are there. I also think that Satan will take a major role in the next volumes (or at least I hope), 'cause he's the main reason of the situation on the island.

it's late (4:30 am here), so don't kill me if i suggest horrible ideas, but...

Mx0 was good. The lead was sort of stupid in the beginning, but he was better at other , more useful things. 😛 http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2984

I would suggest Air Gear, but the lead protagonist is kind of crazy.

Gantz, maybe? 8D http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=208

Zetman, definitely zetman... http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=42

that's it for my suggestions! i hope they aren't too bad. runs for cover

I understand your points. It is a pretty much ridiculous ending. Granted I am wiling to argue that as serious as some of the dramatic moments in Mai-HiME seemed the show was never intended to be "mature" on the same level of something like Berserk. It's essentially a cute, fun shonen magical girl show. As much as I dislike the ending, if they left it with every important character but Mai dead, I'm really not sure that would fit the oft light mood of the series.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've thought about Air Gear, I really enjoy the manga Tenjho Tenge by the same artist. I've also thought about Gantz (and coincidentally I've also enjoyed a series by the artist of that, though I doubt they're very similar series). The problem is I lack pretty much all initiative when it comes to jumping into huge long running series like that.

As for the other two suggestions, neither seems to really jump out at me at first glance.
