Her facial features don't seem African to me. Her skin is most certainly "black" in color, but I've seen south/south east asian women with really dark skin too. I know Yammy called her a "black woman" but he could have just been talking about her skin color and not specifically saying she was of African descent, or he could just be an idiot who doesn't know better.
Tosen on the other hand has very African facial features.

actually i never noticed but tousen does have the lips of a black person, lol...guess you were right about that, + the shades and the hair, yeah.... he's clearly black, but yourichi looks clearly black too....only she's got a weave or something, but yeah... their both about 3shades darker then i am, so thats what makes it obvious to me i guess......and i thought of another one Mugen from Samurai Champloo, he's black right?

How could Tosen be african AMERICAN when he's got a name like Tosen, and he's a dead guy? I didn't know ALL black people were AMERICAN. What, none from Europe? There's so much about this thread topic that opens up a can o' worms, but I've gotta say it's UUBer shallow (when we categorize all dark skinned and/or afro-haired and/or black-people-feature-sharing characters as being african american). 🤢

c'mon now....you can't have a swagger like that and be from Europe....those shades scream ATL....but on a serious note the topic strayed from African American....to just black, no ones really saying there american.....just black....it's common sense they're not american if they live in japan

You know, I always thought that it wouldn't make sense for all the shinigami in Soul Society to be japanese even if they do have Japanese names. Some of them clearly are designed to not be Japanese. Tosen is one of those, but I'd also say characters like Matsumoto and Urahara are intended to be caucasian.
I also have to disagree and say that Chad does look Mexican and Ichigo, minus the hair color, does look Japanese (well, as japanese as any of the others). That's just how I see it though.
