You're also an idiot.
"How To Tell People They Sound Racist." Yeah, I so needed a video for that because it's SO hard to say "You sound racist"[/sarcasm].

and you're the smart one in assuming that i meant you? i simply wanted to post a video before this whole thread becomes a discussion about racism. "prominent african american character in manga/anime". i already put in my 2 cents my part is done. now justify your reason for being in this thread.

Yeah, actually I thought for sure you meant me. I mean come on, I was being pretty damn stereotypical when I told movingstone he wasn't very smart for an Asian.

As for my reason of being in this thread, I just felt like trolling movingstone. I'm actually very racist against Blacks/Chinks/Ragheads. You guys are too boring, though. I'm done.

[color=red]Stay on topic. And if you don't like the people you can go away.[/color]

damn, i guess i am not very smart because i have to look up the dictionary for most of the words you type such as (trolling, chinks, ragheads), i am being very honest... i dunno why i care so much about what you type about me though.. i guess i am just being plain stupid..

well, and there is this sky pirate from Final fantasy XII (though not a manga)

@movingstone

You can read all the articles and have all the black friends you want. That still doesn't cover up the fact that you know nothing about black people. Your knowledge of us comes from books and a the few black people you know, which in turn is ignorant on your behalf.

Do you understand that around 80% of the news media that covers Blacks is negative, when there is just as many positive things that Blacks do that media feels they won't make a buck off of if they make a story out of it? Do you know why Mr. Popo and Jynx are offensive? Do you know what Black Face is? If you understood that, then maybe you would understand why were so sensitive about how were publicly portrayed.

I'm not in the mood to give you a history lesson, so shut up and look it up before you run up in some forum trying to downplay something that you know jack shit about.

@ZLoanAddict

Fall back. I'm not sure if your black or not, buy all your doing is making the problem worse. "Don't hate, educate" I don't know who came up with that but its appropriate.

This thread has officially reached a critical level of fail. I'm not sure if the internetz could stand anymore fail.

I don't even know the argument because both sides of it make incoherent superfluous points.

/facepalm

sorry for all the troubles...

anyway, i try to educated myself more about the issue and come upon this from wikipedia
"Japan

Blackface in the Japanese ganguro subculture has developed with different intentions to other blackface sub-cultures, as it reflects a conscious embrace of African and African-American culture as a means of sub-cultural identification.[105] Japan prides itself on the supposed-homogeneity of its population and, in reaction to this, certain youth subcultures have taken to blackface as a re-identification and a means of emulating African American “cool”. [105] According to Joe Wood, "they wear blackface in order to embrace black people."

Japanese encounters with blackface dates back to 1853 when Commodore Perry "re-opened" Japan and brought with him a troupe of minstrels. While historically whites have considered Japanese "colored" and much contact with American blacks took place in the early 1900s[citation needed], after Japan's humiliating loss in WWII, identification and sense of equality with white Americans became important. An inferiority complex developed in which negative representations of blackness were depicted.[citation needed] In reference to the experiences of African American servicemen in Japan, Ben Hamamoto writes, “Many felt a noticeable difference being in a country that did not have a history of slavery, segregation, and white supremacy and found genuine curiosity more than prejudice colored their experiences with Japanese people.”[106]

For many years the Japanese have appreciated African American musical styles, notably jazz, funk, rock ‘n’ roll, and hip hop. Members of ganguro subcultures, male and female, darken their skin with the intention of appearing "cool", using tanning beds rather than make-up.[105] Groups that have incorporated blackface into their act include Rats & Star and The Gosperats. Besides the "cool" aspect, adoption of blackface also serves a way for Japanese teens to "rebel against a conformist society."[105] Blackface in Japan has sparked interest among many hip-hop artists and fans. For example, Iona Rezeal Brown has created numerous art pieces to reflect this ganguro culture. Her pieces often intertwine images of African-American experience with traditional Japanese images. [107]

Ganguro groups are considered an embarrassment throughout much of Japan because they are considered as 'fake' or 'unauthentic'. They have also been criticized by fellow hip hop followers who believe that hip hop is about the notions of graffiti, break-dancing, and style, but that skin tone should not be an issue. [108] Hamamoto places Japanese blackface in the context of Japan's history of racism, and finds it surprising that they have not made significant racial progress over time. In his view, Japanese blackface draws from an oppressive and racist past and is not sensitive to the cultural implications of its origins."

As for Yoruichi, although there are a number of things she could be, I'm inclined to think she is black, given the fact that Ulquiorra refers to her as a black woman.

Yoruichi isn't black~ o_o And Ichigo & co. all look look white. Almost all manga characters look white in fact. None of them look Asian, they only have asian names.

Also about the black comment, that could've easily been a mistranslation or simply referred to the color of her skin which is really black. Well, not black black, but you get what I'm saying. And in black/white, she usually looks even more darker than when colored.

Anyways, why am I getting so into it. 😐 leaves

why is this conversation still going on? i thought i cleared this up weeks ago.....but for whoever chose not to believe what i said, or choose it to be a "mistranslation".....here's exactly what said, as he was reffering to Youruichi.....
(if you want to check it out, feel free too it was said on episode 116)

"Kuro onna"

noticed he said "kuro"...which literally means black, the japanese use it as BOTH Black in color and Black in race.........he did not say brown which is "Chairo"...which is actually color her skin, and with that said, seeing as she is not the color black, it can only mean she is of the black race.........any further discusson on Youruichi "not being black" is ridiculous and means you're either in denial for whatever reason (i wont make assumptions or jump to any conclusions) or you're just contradicting the manga-ka's word on what the character he made is,.........and honestly it's stupid that this even got this far, seeing as thread isn't called "What race is Yourichi from Bleach?"

like foreal get back on topic......why are people talking about ganguro girls, and jynx, and black face and all that other shit 😕 ... and BTW i'm not aiming all this at the person who i quoted, just taking what he said as an example to clear this up for once and all....because honestly i saw this thread turning in a bad direction within a couple more posts, and having people be offended........be smart people, we're here to discuss manga related issues, not geographical and racial discrepancies or political correctness and awareness.......and lets all do the thread and forum a favor, and stay on topic by posting "african american characters in manga" or just dont post in here at all, because some people are really coming off as ignorant.........no offense to anyone of course

Sry about going off Topic so hard.

I still believe that Yoruichi is black. Cause if she isn't then we can argue that the 8 tails isnt black either.

Yoruichi still doesn't look black to me no matter how hard I look.

Maybe shes east indian? And what about mexican/latinos in manga? Ive only seen Chad from Bleach

El Cazador de la Bruja, bounty hunter Nadie, most people are Mexican because it takes place in Mexico and Ricardo, the male bounty Hunter too! Sol Bianca one of the crew members I always took as Latino (the one that drinks too much).

Okay we have Bleach, Planetes, (maybe) Berserk...what other Anime/Manga have black female characters? 😕 (by black I mean BLACK)

To mention another manga that features african american characters: Swordfish from the yaoi manga Under grand hotel by Mika Sadahiro. That manga features quite a few black characters.

Great topic. I'm glad that at least Japan has progressed to where they don't draw black people like sambo anymore.

Is Yurichi from Bleach black? I used to think she was now i'm not sure if she's supposed to is or if she's Indian (India, not Native American). I think there was a black girl in Eureka Seven, but she was always half naked and seemed kinda slutty.
