I think social networking is dumb when people get it and are only friends with people they see every day.
I have a facebook and I love it, its the only thing i have to keep in contact with my friends because apparently email is not cool enough for them (that was ridiculously sarcastic) and i have few friends in my new town.

I have facebook because a friend talked me into it, but it's pretty fun because I was able to contact old friends that I hadn't talked to in ages (like people I knew before I moved and had lost touch with, or people I'd met at the beach or on holiday and we hadn't exchanged numbers...).
But, unlike forums or the like, I never add people I don't know. I only have my real life friends on Facebook, and we use it as an alternative to MSN to play games or chitchat.

Have Facebook because it's useful when my friends and I want to see if any of us want to chill or go somewhere. In that way it's useful, but not much for anything else.

I quit myspace after a few months of usage. It was disturbing and aggravating and how people could find my account without me ever giving it to them. There were the bulletins...useless cries for attention and stupid chain letters that reflect on how low others' self esteem was. I was disgusted and I quit it. I've been trying to get another friend to quit, but she's slightly attached to it. I believe its really just a crutch for someone's self esteem--you don't need it. If you really had to contact someone you could get an email or something. shrug
Facebook is another no-no---I'm not interested, probably won't ever be. Waste of time.
I adore Livejournal though--if that counts as a social networking website in your standards. I shop there and the art communities are indulgent and splendid in content and sophistication. I've learn a lot from the people on there and I've bought
multiple magazines and clothing items so it's helpful. It's like all my favourites stored in one site.

Yeah, I have a myspace and used to have a xanga a long time ago. But I deleted my xanga accounts and my myspace is basically sitting in the dust.

I don't use Facebook, MySpace and the like just because I haven't had any real need to use them. I contact my friends by instant messenger, phone or by meeting them and I haven't had anything happen to me that would make me need to use one. So far so good 🤣

I tried Myspace but daily all the contact I got was ads it was really annoying so I just stopped useing it, Doesn't it suck how stuf like that and most major chat rooms like Yahoo and Aol have become infested with adbots, anything public like that is just ruined by people out to make quick cash.

Myspace is good for stalking people, once you find out their names.
I'm not a good stalker tho...so i tend to fail even if i try'd.

just because you make an online profile and socialize with anonymous people who might be faking their identity doesn't mean that you have no life (not being sarcastic)
whether all those people on your buddy list are faking their real names, addresses, or profile pictures or not, you're still communicating with them...i used to think that xanga, facebook, and myspace are useless and ridiculous websites for people with no life and no confidence to interact with reality...now i felt how much of an ignorant person i was...i used to maintain a xanga account in my young years (in the glory of all 15 years of my life) and now a myspace account...i rarely access either, though, since i created both out of a whim and was too lazy to maintain either of them...
when you talk and socialize with other people online, you're still socializing with real people, so you should not be viewed and categorized with the stereotype of people with no life or have no grasp on reality, since technically, you're interacting with other human...even if your buddies lied to you about their personal identity, even if your entire history with them was laced with deceits and untruths, you still were conversing and forming bonds with those people whether they lied to you or not ...i know that was utterly contradicting, but the thing is, even in real life, your real friends could also be lying to you about their financial status, personality, preferences, and other personal features...a disadvantage to online socializing is the lack of body-language, which is a barrier when you're trying to express yourself through the limited amount of emoticons when chatting...
i have half a mind to cancel this post, but i decided to not waste the last 10 minutes of my life by voicing out my weird and contradicting reply
i agree with manick on the part about not releasing too many personal details about yourself on the web though

I don't, I used to have orkut, but I deleted it out of childish frustration. I have a photobucket though since I wanted to show some friend a few pictures

Wow. I'm going to necro this since it was linked to by a red in the other thread.
Did the new one seriously just get locked because of a 3 1/2 year old thread? Any idea how much social networking has grown/evolved since then? I get that the topics are the same, but that doesn't mean the discussion can simply continue from this old thread.
That's just silly.
