Edit: I was wrong, asnwers are 1 and 7.

(x-4)^2=9

x^2-8x+16=9
x^2-8x+7=0
x1= 1
x2= 7

You can also do (it's simpler):

(x-4)^2=9
square root of both
(x-4)=+3 AND (x-4)=-3
x=3+4 AND x=-3+4
x=7 AND x=1

NP.
I like the algebra I can solve.
I think I screwed up there though.
It's -7, -1
^^;;;;

The 7 is correct, but I don't know about the -1.

-1^2 - 8(-1) +7 = 0

1 + 8 + 7 =/= 0

A regular 1 works though.

1 + -8 + 7 = 0 😀

Unless you do the opposite? I can't remember...

Oh what a lol I am.
Been a while, I guess. (I mean, I completely blacked out for a moment there and it all went to hell- forgot the thingie that turns the minus)

Yep, I'm an idiot. :3

Anyways, I can do equations (sometimes), but I have no idea what you actually need.
🙂

(x-4)^2 = 9
x-4 = +/-3
x = 4 +/-3
x = 7, 1

Gah, everyone beat me to it.

Warn: Banned

If all else fails and you need those roots, then use the quadratic equation
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/QuadraticEquation.html

this shows you how to solve it

PS. if you buy a TI-89, it contains features that solve quadratic equations for you.

both answers are positive
All you need to do is plug the answers back into the problem to verify.

Edit: I have a tendency to not check if there's another page.

Need help on a few questions on process engineering.

A distillation column is set up containing A and B. the feed to the column enters at 5000kg/h and is in a 1:1 ratio. The top stream out of the distillation column is sent to a condenser at a rate of 3500kg/h. at the condenser A is taken out and separated into a product stream and a recycle stream. The product stream from the condenser contains 95% A. the bottoms stream contains 90% B. Find the ratio of recycle to product at top.

I've started with a mass balance of A around the condenser but I ended up with 50% of A going to the top and 50% of A going to the bottom which was weird since it says that 90% of the bottom is B.

A mixture of acetic acid, water and benzene is continually distilled, the first two components being fed at a ratio of 4 to 1 by weight. Two product streams leave the column. The top product composition by weight is 10.9% acetic acid, 21.7% water and 67.4% benzene. If the bottom product is purer acetic acid, flowing at a rate of 1.75kg/s, calculate the rate of flow of the feed into the still and its composition by weight and the flow rate of the top product.

This one I don't know where to start >.<

Is there a term for chemicals getting dumped back into where everyone gets them from (like after they go into a container)? I'm going to use "backwash" at the moment but that doesn't sound too scientific.

Well, how about when complaining other people do it and saying it's pertinent to error?

Just say the [insert name of what ever material] was likely contaminated due to improper lab procedure or conduct.

Sorry, but I kinda need this in an hour or so... I apologize for being so rushed. ^_^;;

Anyway, this is for Biology 12. I just did this lab in extracting DNA from bananas and now am doing the follow-up questions:

  1. Why was banana used?
  2. What other vegetables could be used for this and why?
  3. If bacterial cells were being used, could the same process be used to extract the DNA?

^ that's too fast~ I have no clue at all, but I searched for a sec.

The soft flesh of a banana provides a ready source of DNA?
