It's not just you.

The thing about fermenting is, if you get the wrong bacteria (or is it yeast?? can't remember...) the stuff just rots instead of doing what it's supposed to do....pretty gross... 🤢 Though I don't know if natto could GET any more disgusting. 🤣

You could make your own yogurt if you have milk and a special yeast colony just for yogurt making.

Actually you could use another yogurt as the "yeast" colony. By adding yogurt into milk you can make even more yogurt!!! (I actually made my own yogurt before, my grand mother even made yogurt from goat milk...)
As for weird food in manga? yeah I always wondered how can they have beans as desert... Need to try it once, but where to find it?

Dunno where you live, but if there's an international market, or in the Asian section of a big grocery store, you can buy cans of "sweet red bean paste". I like it plain (in small amounts) but it's really at its best as part of something else (manju & daifuku & dorayaki I've tried, want to make taiyaki but I don't have the fish shaped cooking mold).

You can also make your own, there are recipes all over the net. Basically - cook small red beans (adzuki beans work well) with water, add sugar (some recipes add butter & other stuff, I think), mash or blend in the blender, and cook again. Takes some time, but it's not difficult.

Cool thanks,
I'll try looking for it... but I actually like the idea of trying it on my own even better!
I always enjoy making pastries and sweets. I don't really follow the recipes either. Let's say I trust my instinct... It always ends up with something that looks disgusting but it's usually pretty good. My family even enjoys eating the weird stuff I make... The only bad thing with that is that I never end up making the same thing twice lol...

uhhh.....that's only because that yogurt contains some yeast in it......I wouldn't drink it without removing all the yeasts first.....I tried to make it with soy milk.......I didn't dare to test it...well on myself anyway.

I used to make yogurt; you can use yogurt from the store as a "starter" as long as it's one with live cultures, but...it doesn't turn out quite the same. :/

Soy milk might need different stuff to make yogurt, never tried that. If you get the wrong stuff growing in your yogurt-to-be, though, it can get quite nasty.

IF you get the right "stuff" growing in your yogurt, you don't need to kill it before you eat the yogurt - they're actually good for your digestive system.

(Sorry for wandering OT again, I'll try to think of some more weird food.)

Yes...but it is recommended that you take out the yeast colony. Some OTHER thing might be mixed in there. I really wouldn't recommend regular people making it at summer time. We don't have the sanitization and sterilization process as the yogurt company posses.

Nah, I agree that it's weird, but I've never seen it & don't know anything about it, sorry.

Hmm, I do believe the cultures for yogurt are bacteria - lactobacilli and some other ones, not yeast. Yeast is used in bread (although sourdough gets its tang from lactobacilli fermentation in addition to the yeast). Lactobacilli are beneficial for our digestive systems (actually they are good for elsewhere on some bodies, but I am not going into that!)
I think natto is pretty strange - never tried it though. I remember seeing some documentary where a Japanese farmer put soybeans in I think a straw covering, dug a hole in the ground, smoked the stuff, and then buried it. Then he ate it a few days later.
Some anime or another contained the characters putting sugar or mayo on their natto - I think it was Rahxephon?
