I don't even like most yaoi smut. It can be more annoying than shoujo and josei smut, with bad art. Did I mention bad art? O_O

"Mature" mangas are OK, I guess, no matter what genre/demographic they are. But what's the difference between mature and smut? They both have sex, but the difference I offen see is that smut plots are ridiculous. Anyone agree with me?

Or how do we define mature and smut on this site?

Not all mature mangas include sexual scenes.

I was only talking about those containing sexual scenes without the smut or ecchi label.

Difference? Depth in the story maybe. I feel that there's a difference in the atmosphere. I don't really know how to explain it, but Suimitsutou no Yoru is both mature and has a sexual scene, but I wouldn't call it smut. While I consider Haou Airen smutty, and perhaps mature in graphic.

Anyways, I shouldn't have even bothered to answer, as it is straying from the topic.

I voted sometimes previously.

But aren't ecchi and smut basically the same thing....? >_>

Totally different.

Yeah, different. O_O

Smut is kinda like ecchi aimed at girls though, the only difference I see is that ecchi contains panty/bra shots, while smut focuses on the actual sexual activity, though not explicitly.

And smut is almost always associated with Shoujo/Josei titles. O_O~

Hoho, Yay and Nay are almost tied. >:')

By definition, they both mean the same thing. Seriously.

From the site:
Adult: "Contains subject matter which may be too extreme for people under the age of 17."
Smut:"Deals with series that are considered profane or offensive, particularly with regards to sexual content"

The difference really is in how the sex is portrayed/incorporated into the story. Profane or offensive sexual content often goes hand in hand with ridiculous plots.

As for the topic, I voted "nay." I don't mind smut but from what I've read only a few I consider to be good.

I voted sometimes. There are a few that I like. Most of Yoshihara Yuki's stuff and Stroke Material.

But mostly I dont like smut because they make the girls look stupid and the guys are violent. I dont care what I am reading smut, yaoi, yuri, whatever. For me characters are always an important part. Unfortunately most smut fails in that and the stories are so laughably bad with such corny and cringe inducing writing.

They don't, really.

Unless series tagged with ecchi have sex scenes, then they're really not the same. But hey...I don't read ecchi...@_@;;

Yes. I've only known of 3 or 4 series with smut that weren't completely ridiculous, and that was only because the smut was very limited, or the plot was actually good enough that I ignored the silly smut scenes. But 'mature' mangas are completely different for me, and it has to do with the overall atmosphere, as Masami mentioned. x3

Ecchi is more like...panty shots...glimpses, but almost never any sexual activity.
While smut is...sexsexsexsexsexrapesexsexsexsex.

Ok, back on topic guys.

Actually there are a lot of smut titles without violent boys, I believe. KITAGAWA Miyuki's works are labeled smut. But they are not really graphic. I don't think most of them have violent boys. They are more like soap opera-y romance stories, where the characters (including side ones) say unbelievably cheesy lines and behave over-dramatically at times. They are boring to me too. embarrassed Tried to read some but the art was messy.

The long and over-dramatic smut are the worst and most tedious. Some one-shot or one-volume smut are... at least amusing and entertaining, I guess. Examples: Tokyo Erogance, Game Center Fishing. Go ahead and read them if you want to have a laugh, gals. laugh

But too much of those types is tiring too. So I avoid smut altogether now. Some Yoshihara Yuki's works are funny - not all of them and few other authors can be as funny. I personally don't see how a poorly drawn inexplicit sex scene can be exciting. So smut = nay.

There's not much sexuality in smut mangas, actually. For example, Stroke Material, despite its title, is pretty innocent and tame. I've read ecchi with explicit views of labia, nipples, and buttocks (usually accidentally exposed), but I've never read smut with the male's lower body in view. O_O

That's basically how I see it. laugh Which is why it irks me every time I see the smut tag on Hakuji and Red River. Thankfully, the tags on Nana are locked. To me, those mangas (and others like Paradise Kiss and Vitamin (SUENOBU Keiko)) are "mature."

However, I do enjoy some of Yoshihara Yuki's smut titles. They don't take themselves seriously and are just a good laugh.

That really bugs me. A lot of ecchi titles have good art (though not all of them) to show those stuff, while a lot of smut titles have poor messy art and show nothing, esp. on the males' side. O_O Aren't they supposed to be fanservice for females?

Pretty much a "nay" for me.

I haven't read enough "smut" to justify the answer though. Never really had the need or want to.

But the majority of smut manga is sexsexsex 24/7.
There are exceptions, but that is the case for the most part.
Yeah, it is rare to see the guy's youknowwhat in smut manga, though sometimes, in some manga, they at least show the outline?
