dont know if its exactly what your looking for but you could try Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki, the guy dies right at the beginning though.

Happens in the eighth volume of Ikigami. Since the stories are fairly self-contained, if you wanted to, you could skip the prior volumes and just read that one.

Moon Child has that sort of thing...
it's kind of gender bender-y though... and it's older, so it has a rather old shoujo art style (it was written in the 80s)...
The story is top notch though~The person who recommended ES to me also recommended Moon Child btw... they're similar in their relate-able villains and psychological drama
