The rating of "1" and "10"

I usually read at least the first volume otherwise I agree I haven't read enough to give a rating. If it's serialised I'd say about 5/6 chapters minimum, more than likely 10 chapters before I rate it. I try to rate every manga I read. To me 10 is can't wait for next chapter, art fantastic, plot fantastic and getting better, good characters and characterb development, basically ticking all boxed for me. I negative mark so I knock points off for poor art work, boring story, cliche, flat characters etc. 1 for me is utterly unreadable imho for whatever reason. It's rare I would mark so low.
The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.

Some of you guys are being a bit harsh (maybe even unrealistic) about the "it should only be rated 10 if [this]" stance. Everything is subjective, so of course my 10 is going to be different from everyone else's. That's just something you have to take into account.
I agree that people who just do a 1 or a 10 and nothing inbetween skew the statistics, but I've never thought of a ratings scale as 10 = the only and perfect ideal, but rather as "This takes the cake for me," with the understanding that what works for some people doesn't work for others.
EDIT: I am much pickier about what I give 10s now, but I do still give stories I REALLY like 10s.
As for artwork, I'm willing to overlook artwork if the story is that compelling, but it is a visual medium, so there must be some judgment of that as well.
If I'm trying a new genre, I also try to take into account how people who like the genre might take it, even if I didn't personally enjoy it. (Meaning: sometimes things get higher marks than I would've personally given it, because I'm new to the genre and I'm probably being too critical at that point.)
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.
From a bumper sticker I like:

I don't rate often, actually not at all. The one manga I did give a rating to was Hana Yori Dango. It's my favorite manga that I've read well over 10 times. It never gets old and I always cry at the parts that made me cry the first time I've read it, even the 8th time I read it.
Despite all the drama craze, I fell in love with this manga way before I realized there were dramatizations. So my love for this manga made me give it a 10. No other manga has ever had the same effect so I don't bother to rate anything else because compared to this, I only somewhat like the other manga.

Well, you have to acknowledge subjectivity has a strong influence in the series rating. In my case, I only rate stuff I like, I don't give 1 and don't give 10 either anymore. Of course some 10 ratings remains, because it's me liking a manga so strongly what gives the extra point or point fraction I wouldn't if I were more objective.
As for art/storytelling, I personally don't care much about the art, so I would give a good rating regardless the artwork.
This week's favorites:
ççççççç[Ô.Ô] tsutopodus© will eat your manga and steal your cats!
I don't really give 10s or 1s.
Even if it sucks very much, it's
still around 2 or 3.
If it is good, it is 9. Haven't read
a perfect work.

I never give 1's. I only rate series after I've read a fair amount of it (three volumes is typical, unless of course it is shorter than that). If I hate a series to the point where I would give it a 1, I'm not going to be reading it for that long.
10's on the other hand I do give. My rating system is based on the enjoyment I get out of the manga rather than the quality of the art/plot/whatever, so I don't feel so bad about giving a ten when I'm enthusiastic about that particular series. All that has 10s for me at the moment are my absolute favorite series (Claymore, Gunslinger Girl, and Himegami) and a couple yuri hentai series that had length and substance.

Maybe an ABCDF rating system would be better 😕

If I give a manga a 1, it has to make me seriously question why the Japanese fans let that certain manga keep running while they let others than were better get canceled.
But the real question should be why do certain members on here rate a manga 9 or 10 when they only like the art and nothing else, or when they just keep repeating what they say with different words instead of giving an actual reasons as to why they like it.

I've never rated manga a 1 yet. The lowest I rated so far was a 3.
If a manga is that bad then I just stop reading. I don't like to give ratings if I haven't finished it or read up to the latest release if it's ongoing.

I agree with this. Of course I take into account the quality of the art, characters, and plot development. It's not just about likability.

I do this also. Ratings are mostly subjective but I try to at least be somewhat objective when rating manga.
I also think the rating scale should be a smaller range like 1-5. It seems most people don't use the lower ratings as much and set their average around 7.

Hmm...I rarely...very rarely rate a series.
But there are about two manga I can think of that I gave a 1 to.
Love Monster and Happy! are those two.
For Love Monster...I gave it a 1 because it was really stupid, the characters weren't interesting, they were rather pointless imo. The whole theme of the manga is overused and very cliche, the main girl annoyed the hell out of me, and after that manga, my hate for stupid girls started.
I gave Happy a 1 because...I just couldn't stand the characters. Every one of them let other people step all over them. Most of them are stupid. One guy throws around the word "Love" and yet, he hooks up with her rival. The antagonist of the story is very very bitchy and annoying that you want to kill her. The main character does nothing to stop it, and is very oblivious of her surroundings that it annoys me.
/end rant.
Well uhh...I give series a 1 if I don't like the characters, the story is cliche and boring.

I rated loads of 1s in the mangas that I've read..mostly shoujo... sometimes i feel so pissed off on a certain chapter that I immediately went to this forum and rate that damn manga '1'...
But I do like some of the shoujo that I randomly leeched. some are good whilst others are downgraded to the point of 'cliche'..

In my case I vote 10-8 to mangas i liked.
I also rate with the '1' rating i think it' normal i think it approximately represents the readers feeling.
the '1' rating this topic is so frustrated about i think you should drop it, 😛
cuz' it has to exist to show many opinions. for example: although "Claymore" has the highest score here it has a big number of
'1' rating , it just shows this manga has lover and hates.
To sum it up, i don't think it has a big diffrence. 😃

I rated manga I read from '7' to '10'. If I think the manga scores below than that, I don't bother to rate them at all.
And I only rate complete manga that I've finished reading them. The only running series that I've rate are Berserk, Hajime no Ippo, and One Piece, which I rate '10' for all of them.
