The fact that you can even compare the two means that there's something wrong with your head.
You are right, is just too obvious that JK Rowling is better
Do you seriously feel that way, or are you just trying to piss me off?

"I rebel; therefore I am" - Goblin Kingdom (novel)
"I won’t tell him not to envy, but that man sure is a bag of b*tchery" - Sevens (novel)
"Well… let’s just have some fun with it." - Sevens (novel)

I just felt that this poll was too one sided, and somebody needed to defend poor JK Rowling, but I think that there is certain truth in my last statement.

I said maybe, but if it pisses you off, then I'll say yes, Rowling=Shakespeare 😀
And seriously - she writes with 'easy' English, her plot was good, although the conclusion was so.. boring and normal. And totally went against what she wrote in her books. But nevermind that.
Shakespeare, on the other hand, is quite boring, if you have to go through that whole Middle Age English, but when you read his plays in today's English, they are even more enjoyable. But still, they are the best when seen on stage.

The basis of my defense is competition. Shakespeare in his time had to compete against other writers in his country, while now, writers have to compete against all other writers in the world, even if they write in other languages, so a writer that actually makes it big time, is going to make it because he/she is really good. Actually, this follow the rules of Darwin's natural selection, with more competition, the product will be born stronger, in this case the book.
Another point. I bought my Harry Potter collection in a book store in ZhenZhou in the Henan province in China. They didn't have Shakespeare there, but they did have JK Rowling, in Chinese and English. Shakespeare might be cult in English speaking countries, but JK Rowling has fans all over the world.
JK Rowling, as other people have said, is easy and fun to read. Critics love Shakespeare, good for them, they might keep reading it for generations, while the masses buy Harry Potter's books.

the younger generations are already forgetting about it. When i was in elementary school, HP was all the rage, everyone read it, if you didn't then you'd be a freak. Now when I volunteer at elementary school the kids either only have seen the movie or only has read like 1 or 2 of the books in random order as well.

Are they still planning to make those ridiculous movies? You know if you have 100% of films to books ratio - you won't be remember for long and those movies in DVD form will rot at Walmart amen.

Yeah, they're making the last two, but they're speeding up on production 'cause of how fast the actors are aging.

"Easy and fun to read" does not make for good literature, it makes for decent entertainment. Just like any trashy novel you might buy in an airport or at a supermarket. You don't read it for any depth or art, you simply read it to be entertained. Harry Potter has no content that can be described as deep or meaningful, and the writing is subpar, it simply has a decent plot that appeals to a huge number of demographics.
And I don't necessarily believe that the bookstore you were in didn't have Shakespeare. Based on your outlook, I find it hard to believe that you would look to see if they had it, so I think you don't actually know and are just saying something in a vague attempt to prove a point. Shakespeare's translated into other languages plenty, heck, just look at the huge number of anime and manga that makes reference to it at some point.
Additionally, your point about competition is irrelevant, as every modern (english) author is essentially competing against Shakespeare's works in their entirety at some level.

NightSwan also said that she wanted to peg me, once, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a threat...

You have spoken the words true, that i could not D:
Anyways. In no way. NONE! can Rowling be considered Equal to shakespeare. That's like, as someone already said, comparing a childs painting to Van Goh's.
J.K.rowling mad an Enjoyable series of books. Yes, that is a fact. I enjoyed them a lot, Up to volume 5. Thats when it started going downhill. and book 7 was just..... pukes
Anyways(i say this a lot 😛 ) Here is why Shakespeare is infinitely better than J. K. Rowling
Shakespeare's romeo and Juliet. A story about 2 people who fall in love, even though their parents hated each other. And, in the end, Did you know what. Not going to say it in case some people haven't (lolXD) read it. A story about how love can't be stopped.
Rowlings Harry potter series. A story about a person who finds out he's different. meets other people who are different. Makes friends with some, enemies with others. Cries about his parents. Uses his special gift. Finds out he has a MORTAL ENEMY AT THE AGE OF 11. And, in the end, found out that Love conquers all.
Now.... I wonder...... which do i like more... a story that could and has happened.... or a story about how if you have love in your heart anything is possible... Hmmm..
Btw. in no way is this a coherent counter-arguement . If you understood it, Kudos to you. You have just leveled up, and are now a lvl 99 Grand Master Templar and can instantly kill J. K. Rowling with a simple glance. Dont forget to Bury the ashes in the graveyard, or she may rise again because of the power of love

Hmm, im not sure (which, of course, is sarcasm) But didn't they almost plagerize the story and made it into an anime called...... RomeoxJuliet?

Now, that's just plain rude. I did look for Shakespeare in the library, actually I was looking for an English classic, but the only thing I got was Ivanhoe.
I didn't go there to buy Harry Potter, you know, but that was practically the only thing in english they had all the time.
And art is published to enjoy it, the reason for it's creation might be to let the human soul express itself, and it is known that certain art pieces are hidden for years because the authors don't wish to share them to the world, but if the authors publish them, they do so because they thing that it might be enjoyable to other people.
When I need some depth in my literature, I prefer philosophy.
And I ask you. Is Shakespeare your favorite author? Or you just defend him to be on the safe side (Critics do love him)?

Im sure evryone who defends him defends him for one sole purpose. Because of how great his works were and how mediocre Harry potter was compared to him.
Also, no. Shakespeare isnt my fav author. but when compared to Rowling, i like him a lot better

Hmm, can we really see Rowling as a great/good/bad writer if she wrote only one series? I mean, from what I've heard she has plans for new books. Maybe if we'll read more of her books we will be able to be more objective on this matter? Because judging her from 7 books about the same character, from which the two last volumes sucked royally, can we really say something about her style of writing?
