Depeche Mode and the Cure are overrated? What makes you say that? 😕

i find them extremely overrated, don't get me wrong, i am not saying they are bad in any form, and just cause a band is overrated, doesn't mean they are bad(seeing as i like slipknot, Fall out boy, and a few others listed here) it just means that they get much more attention and things to their name than they deserve.

they are both good, but, there are much better bands for the genre to be known than them.

You shouldn't forget the timeline. I'm not a big fan of both but Depeche Mode and The Cure, as well as other groups are the very beginning of the Dark Wave scene from the late 70ies/early 80ies. Of course there are better ones nowadays but those came later and were mostly influenced by them. Styles and genre develop over time.

But both were for many of my age and above the entry into Dark Wave (I'm a 28 years old Gothic). That they may sound overrated to you compared to all the groups that raised up during the past 30 years is understandable. But you shouldn't forget that they're the - so to speak - genre starters with a huge influence of the later development of the dark scene and music.

That's why I usually not take part in such discussions. Overated, underrated...
Ratings in general are overrated, imho. Besides the personal taste influencing the own opinion way to much (If I would have to call something overrated, then let me choose the whole Gansta Rap genre - I personally hate it and it makes no sense to me), the generation conflict is another problem to rate something accurate - young ones can't grap the feeling of the past days. Without insulting younger people, but they simply can't know how a older scene and subculture was developing "live" and how awesome someone or something was during a past event (e.g. Woodstock is something I can't grap or the bad rating of old school manga by teens because the art style is not fitting modern expectations).

On the other hand, older people are biased on accepting new stuff all to often and I can't exclude me from that. New groups do have a hard time getting through my "quality filter" a lot more then during my school time. Especially the cover and copy mentality of stuff that was unique and amazing to us just a few years back is something that really gets on my nerve.

Long rant, short message: Don't say "overrated" without seeing the whole image. Depeche Mode was born in 1980 and a lot has happened since then. That they can't keep up standards over 30 years is only natural but during their "hot phase", they were truly important to a whole youth culture and influenced a lot of other musicans later on. Same goes for other bands, of course.
And no (to prevent a possible debate), I would never rate Gangsta Rap badly just because I dislike it deeply. I would simply stay out of the discussion since that is clearly not my world and therefor I don't feel like I should decide about it in any way.

Nana Kitade <- She sucks anus. I hate her voice. >=(

It's funny, but she isn't overrated at all... not in Japan, anyway. It's just Americans who don't know better and think she's the hottest thing overseas.

@eni, too long to quote x.X

yea, i understand what your getting at, and i give them the respect they deserve for being some of the first, but i still think that they are overrated, that doesn't take away from them being good, but like you said, its all personal taste, so its not really worth arguing about. 🤣

I kinda like Maroon5.
Actually, I like 3 songs and have only heard about 3 songs by them so I'm don't really have a say.
Hannah Montana is for sure. Her stuff just goes down hill. Not that they were at a very high place to begin with.
I kinda like "If we were a movie" though. It's a little cute.

i think Linkin Park is quite overrated, but that doesn't mean they aren't good.

Same goes for System of a Down and a few others

the way i see it is that they had to be some kinda good to get that many fans and to get to that status.

Jonas brothers - No they are not "cute" they suck.
Hannah Montana - She sounds like my grandma with a sore throat.

Spice girls?

Ayumi Hamasaki: I think Namie Amuro is better but then again, I don't listen much to her either.

Mariah Carey(She used to be really good before the mid 90s but whatever.)

Also a lot of those very big Chinese pop stars, especially some or almost all of the "Heavenly Kings"... I mean they're incredibly over-rated. Most of their stuff is just so bland... rolls her eyes.

And maybe it's just me but Gackt sounds kinda over-rated? There're tons of musicians who could play better and compose better but who're under-recognised.

Kenny G: some of his songs aren't too shoddy in terms of composition but his playing? Geh...
