Paintings; discuss. o__o; Your favorite ones, your most hated ones, the style/time period you like...? Etcetera.

Sam Dillemans; love his rough drawing style. You can tell that he's been inspired by Van Gogh~

As someone who paints, I personally have never really been inspired much by the work of other artists.... maybe it was just a case of how this guys uses tones here or how that guy composes/frames his stuff.... but I never intentionally "borrowed" anyone's style.... to the best of my knowledge, at least.

Like Doc, I do find the work of Sam Dillemans pretty interesting.

I also was drawn to a lot of Dali paintings when I was younger.

But the works that probably hooked me were the "pop-art" or "public-art" styles of Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg and the superflat movement pioneered by Takashi Murakami. They made "high-art" accessible to the masses by repackaging low-culture, sub-culture, or in Murakami's case, dub/club-culture and selling it to high-society..... It was tantamount to robbery, but it was brilliant in concept.... and robbing rich fools always makes you good in my book.

Personally, I draw inspiration from the people I see, my imagination, my dreams, natural and urban environment more than any one of the great artists.

A crack in a wall or the shape of a cloud taught me more about art than any of those ninja turtle Italian painters ever did.

Just my 2 cents....

IMO, rococó is the best style. I love that sweet (and sometimes a bit blasé) atmosphere!

I've never been a big fan of color, but I've always found Dali's work to be intriguing. His pencil sketches, often with shocking blasts of single colors (usually red), have always attracted me the most.

For more modern "art," I tend to like Onne Vanderwal's black and white sea photos.

Yeah, Monet's good. And Renoir.

I've always loved Alphonse Mucha.
His works are so beautiful...

Never liked Van Gogh. 🤢
For me, he's probably the most overrated painter...

You might not like Van Gogh's art style; meaning rough sweeps with his pencil and all, ... you like smoothness more, so that can't be helped. It doesn't change that Van Gogh is good though, he was one of the firsts who put his soul in his paintings which usually meant somber paintings since he had a broken heart himself.

Before that, impressionism and highly religious-tinted paintings were the common standard.

Haha, he has a manga-ish style, no wonder you like him.

And I like Destruction as well from Thomas Cole's "The Course of Empire" collection.

My favorite paintings are from Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, and Wassily Kandinsky.

Dali because his art style is rather interesting, and I love his play on symbolism in all his pieces especially this one: Clicky

I always look for Kandinsky's work for inspiration since I prefer painting abstracts then actual portraits or landscapes, which my professor absolutely hates me for.

I'm not sure why I like most Klimt's pieces, they just draw me in. Same can be said about Monet.

Not a huge fan of Van Gogh's, but I like some of his work.

Having been exposed to more Spanish artists (because of my degree) than anything else, I have a slant toward them. Dali is a favorite (though the man was bonkers), but I also like the history behind Picasso's "Guernica" - especially since I got to travel to see the real thing.
@Luna - I like La persistencia de la memoria, but I prefer El toreador halucinogeno. I had it hanging on my wall at home. =)

Beyond that, el Greco's "El entierro del Conde de Orgaz" (The burial of the Count of Orgaz) was always inspiring. I like the self-portrait hidden within it. He's the only one in the painting looking directly at the viewer. I love el Greco's color palettes. (Again, seeing it in person really helps.)

And finally, I really loved to see Gaudí's work all over the city of Barcelona. His architectural concepts were so original. I wish I could've gone in some of the houses instead of just driving past them. I really wish he could have completed his master work: the many-spired landmark church in Barcelona, El Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia.

I went to spain and saw the musem with most of his works. I effing loved it. Even his movies (some are weird...cutting an eyeball open...wtf?) are pretty interesting.

Another one I like is Francis Bacon. He has some amazy stuff 😃

This is my fav of Francis Bacon's stuff

I don't like Van Gogh much. There are some of his stuff that's interesting, but thats about it.

Oh and of course, the fantasy artist Michael Whelan.

Ah, what an interesting thread.
I like a good few painters, constantly discovering new stuff I like.
I love Giorgio de Chirico's works, I'm absolutely blown away by the atmosphere presented in his paintings, such as L'Angoisse du départ. His stark color palette is incredible.

A newfound favourite of mine; Isle of the Dead, by Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin. The fifth incarnation (one shown) is my favourite. Really inspiring stuff.

I also enjoy Edward Hopper's works, in particular; Road In Maine. He paints landscapes in such a beautifully lush manner...

Other painters I love include Francis Bacon, Jack B. Yeats, Caravaggio, Salvador Dali, Francisco de Goya, some Impressionists, among others...

i have always liked Salvador Dali's works. maybe because they triggered my imagination.

and always liked Monet's paintings either. they are really peaceful and hopeful.

never was a big fan of Van Gogh. his painting style is just too harsh for me. though his personality and life are quite interesting.

The lack of interest in paintings disappoint me. 😔

Rik Wouter's style is unique. His paintings have a blurry feel, and they don't really show any perspective in the paintings themselves. I also can't believe no one mentioned "The Scream" yet. There's so much history behind that painting! And it was a novelty to actually try to have a sound act as the focus of the painting.

I like this painting of Picasso as well. I admire his versatility in painting techniques. If you look up his work, you'll find all different kind of styles.
