I'd say only one name has so far tickled my fancy well enough to remember and recognize: Zdzislaw Beksinski.
I also like the style of 18th century romanticism.

A lot of people have mentioned Dali, and yes I do appreciate his works for their originality and their romantic history, since Dali's muse was his own wife.
But my personal favorite painter, and I’m surprised no one mentioned him, is Rembrandt. I always loved the way he mixed light with shadows, creating a mysterious but somewhat worm atmosphere (he used a lot of yellow and worm colors in his paintings). I find his works as being very sincere since I view them as a representation of the soul acknowledging both the good points and the faults of the people and of his own since he painted a lot of auto portraits .

I collected some of my favourites. Here
Caravaggio. Check out my copy of his "il Bacchino malato" copy (my first pastel experience)
Jacques-Louis David Patroclus (not one of his famous works but...)
I usually don't like academic paiting, but William Bouguereau caught my eye. Motherland (the background is amasing here), Cupidon (Ibet he slept with her. Or at least jerked off), Elegy (my favourite)
As for impressionists here goes Paul Signac (pointillism) Palais des Papes Avignon
Modern weirdos:
Fontana. He makes stuff like that: 1, my fav (Yes. This is cut canvas)
Vasarely 1, 2, 3
Rothko 1, 2
Yeah, Bansky is a great guy. My city also has some unique graffiti. "Interesting fairy tales" 1, 2, 3, 4
P.S. Simon Schama's Power of Art series are great.
My favorite artist is Peter Howson (Scottish artist, born 1958)
I like the way he uses strong shadow and exaggerates muscle
example The blind leading blind III Not my favorite, I couldn't find my it. 🙁

One of my favorite painters is Hieronymus Bosch, but mostly for the subject matter and the imagery he painted were quite interesting. Those of you who are Salvador Dali appreciators may like some of Bosch's surreal paintings.
Another favorite of mine is Degas. The ones involving the dancers are well-known, but I just love his depiction of movement and his composition choices.
Georges Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is just amazing. Pointillism is a difficult technique (from my experience, maybe not to others), but his combination and use of colors is just amazing.
edit: watdafack? Grammar much? This is the last time I'm fixing this and I don't care if there's any more mistakes. >:-(
I never remember artist's names so I will go with style, I love Baroque. They are so mesmerizing upfront that I can stare for hours- I love the sallow base and the stark contrast human skin looks on them...I am a fan of mythology or any painting that has a story behind it...

I don't know much about art yet,
but about the paintings I've already seen,
I can say that I love Gustav Klimt.
Wouldn't know which painting to choose to be the best though.
And I love impressionism.

I love impressionism, especially the works of Monet such as:
Impression: Sunrise and his series of paintings of the Rouen Cathedral at different times of day.
I also like Caravaggio for his use of light and shadow.
And also the Columbian artist Fernando Botero's portly style:
Pareja bailando
Carrobomba
Massacre in Columbia
I like the paintings of René Magritte, Dominique Appia, and Salvador Dali. (linked are 3 of my favorites from each one)
i liked Van Gogh's Cafe At Night, the first time i saw it,i felt so attached to it,for some reason O.o
i also love Claude Monet's works,IMO its very realistic.
*as of style,i like artists who use perspective and that style called chiaroscuro <--i think thats how you spell it?

Alphonse Mucha has beautiful art noveau work
Ophelia is a favourite
Degas and his paintings of dancers
The Coronation of Napoleon-I simply get lost in this one forever
The Young Martyr-Quite possibly my favourite painting
Dali for the unique and vivid quality of his work
Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte-As an artist, I'm always astounded that Seurat did it dot by dot.
Yes, I do like historical art 😳
But this list will probably be added onto; there are a lot of paintings and artists I love without knowing the names.
Wanted to add on ones I do not like:
Andy Warhol-Soup cans are not art. he inspiried a total *movement *in art that I dislike.
Pre-Raphaelite art is my favourite, especially anything by Rossetti. I'm also quite fond of Renaissance art, too. 😃
But I really dislike anything modern/post-modern/abstract... 😔 Seems like a case of the emperor's new clothes to me. >:-(
