smut is often necessary in order to further a plotline; porn is just extreme fanservice. although the distinction between them may be a bit blurred, both are used to serve different purposes. the words porn and hentai are basically synonymous nowadays, due to popular culture, since both porn and hentai lack depth in itself.
of course, there are the rare exceptions of hentai that have an amusing story [maybe what-- 5%?] but the majority [95%] just show meanlingless sex. you'd be hard-pressed to find a hentai series with a decent plot among the thousands that degrade the hentai genre to just indiscriminate sex.

theres a difference that is kind of straight forward.
Porn - the whole point of that type of "genre" is sexual arousal and the content doesnt not matter and basically the aim of it is that plainly sex
smut- it is when there is a manga and a bit of sex here and there is add to make it better i guess. But the focus of smut is romance and the plot line not just the sex

porn is when 90% + is devoted to sex and showing it in a really graphic way, and when it is the only thing focused on.
smut is, well also focused on sex, but in a waaay less graphic way. also, the focus on the story is usually on love and the smuttier parts.
IMO anyways.
tho there are some exceptions, some smut is very borderline porn

Pornography's intention is sexually exite the reader/viewer. Therefore smut is not porn.

Smut has a lot of sex but there's no genitals/body fluids, etc. Nothing explicit and shown at all. Compared with hentai, it's basically nothing. It's about sex but no visible sex (the most important parts).
