In death note... isnt the hero L?... 😛
as for mangas where the hero dies.
Guess u all forgot Saint Seiya and wonder if cowboy beboop have a manga... if rurouni kenshin is like the OVA... try that one too or berserk 😛 he doesnt die but im pretty sure he wish for it ^^

and in Death Note, even tho i stopped reading it, when i started reading it i liked Light and thought he was the hero, even after L was introduced. for some reason i didnt really like L, he was creepy and weird. but ill say this...L or Light, i think it depends on who u like to be the hero. if u like L than he is the hero or if u like Light than he is the hero
some1 said yu yu hakusho, does he die 😕 i didnt finish the manga and anime...i dont remember how it ended. can some1 tell if he dies or not.

Regarding death note and yuyu hakusho:
Both L and Light die though, so it doesn't really matter who the hero is. As long as you don't conisder Near the hero, you're set. And for yuyu hakusho, yusuke dies in the first chapter, doesn't he?

Not 100% sure, but Ubel Blatt has a hero previously perceived to have been dead. Don't know if it counts though.

He technically dies at the beggining. Dunno how it ends (know how the anime ended though)

ah i watched the beginning of shakugan no shana, so i'm pretty sure it's the same as in the manga. i dunno if this actually qualifies though.

I feel the need to chime in about Death Note, in that, there really is no hero. The closest things to heroes in Death Note are the police. Light couldn't be called a hero, intentions aside. L's just playing a giant game of Chess. And Near sucks.
However, if you're looking for manga in which the main character dies, it's a different story. In which case, Death Note applies.

Kenshin does die at the end of the OVA's, whoever said that he doesn't die. And Yusuke also dies right before the beginning of the last saga. You know, when he is reborn right after with his demon blood kicking in.
