Adult: Any sexual contents or mature contents will fall under this category. We shall go with the North America standard, which means upper body of women also count. There. All better.

But that's a choice they made and we have to go with it...
But hey, isn't a proper authority supposed to be afraid of those it rules? 😀

I dunno about that I think just sex should fall under those...
I come from south america and as long as they are actually not having raw sex or the genitals are showed you can see it on tv at any time....
ummm... like just a few minutes ago there was an ad for some cream and the girl is completely naked and is alowed because she is sideways and you don't see her.... ummm completely!?.... anyway my point is that you can still see all of her yet is not sex -although sexual- and not trashy and well... you get my point!
so why don't we go with this set of rules!! or at least any the european or japanese whatever but if it goes under the american one many of the series I like will be under Xrate

I
I confess i am not sure where to pull the line between yaoi shonen ai and yuri shoujo ai.
Yaoi- Groping, one step up from shonen-ai. yaoi is mature type male on male example Papa to Kiss in the Dark and Sensitive Pornograph those are both yaoi
Shonen-ai - innocent love, crushes, things like that example Gakuen Heaven.

yaoi == sex (graphic or not)
shounen ai == no sex
ecchi == sexual innuendos (jokes, groping, lots of panties etc.) but no sex scenes.
adult == sexual scenes outside and inside hetai concept (sometimes it is necessary to put adult rating on yaoi for instance even if it's given that that yaoi story will contain sex)
mature == violence, gore, complicated storyline that are more fit for more mature readers (issues like suiside, insest in non-sexual oriented stories) may also contain nudity or sex outside the hetai concept (rape too).
hetai == heterosexual porn
smut == nonsensial sex, lewdness (can be seen in shoujo or yaoi with no plot (PWP))

Does anyone have a 100% certain definition of smut? I also only have a vague understanding of the term. All I know is that most of the series translated by shoujomagic falls under this term, and that most of them contain sex scenes.

Hmm.. the way I see it, it’s either shoujo stories that have heterosexual sex, but not the kind of sexual scenes/plot that would interest an average male reader ie it’s not hentai, or PWP yaoi short stories (plot what plot == stories that only revolves about how to get someone into bed without a hint of a plot)
edit: Btw I do think that this topic is tiny bit pointless, since there will always be people who for some reason will think that manga are these collection of fluffy, proper, moral comics (maybe with a bit action in them) and will argue that any warning is confusing and not enough.
Also, I have a question: if a series is seinen (which mean more or less that it’s oriented to more adult/mature readers) and it already have a mature rating to boot, is there any reason to add ecchi rating to it?

Personally, I say yes since "mature" does not necessary mean "ecchi" or that it's sexual. But you could also put a note into the summary of the manga.

Goodness...according to this standard, Ranma 1/2 would be "adult"! 🙄 My boys are 11 now & have been reading Ranma for years.
Yeah, I'm one of the old people... Don't see why there's such a big deal about ratings. Regardless of what it says, you won't really know what you're dealing with until you read it yourself. As a parent, I'm not going to let my kids loose on the internet for quite some time because I know what's out there. 🤣 In the mean time, I'll be screening what they're exposed to and educating them on making good choices, blah blah blah, but no ratings in the world are going to stop them from dling pron (and hiding it) if they really want to.
