Kay, so I haven't gone through all 19 pages of this (too long .) but I noticed that NO ONE mentioned Sage Francis (couple of his songs):

Escape Artist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ7w-z4BvMo

Makeshift Patriot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcMJ5QD4r60

Slow Down Ghandi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PITNYQtZWFE

Sea Lion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BffumeEaYOI

I'm going to admit, I don't listen to a lot of rap music, and I saw this guy live at a Rise Against concert (rock music~) but I really liked him, and I think he's way too underrated. Check him out, mmkay?

It's mainly because "Sage Francis" is one of the leading titles/artists of nerd rap/emo rap, along with "Aesop Rock". Most hip-hop heads regard people who listen to them as "suburban white people who doesn't know rap" and also uses it as a insult to people[i.e. a hip hop head might be like "fucking go listen to your sage francis and gtfo" if they are trying to put down a guy who doesn't agree with them/says stupid stuff/etc]. Also, they are both signed to Definitive Jux label, which has a well known "nerd-rap" image.

That aside, I don't listen to him, I have heard his songs before and most of it is random vocabulary/lyrics thrown in that makes absolutely no sense, also lots of it is emo stuff >.>. Just not my cup of tea, but seriously there are lots of people trashing them, just listen to your shit and let others do whatever the fuck they want you know? There seem to be lots of sage france/aesop rock/nerd rap hate in the internet community, especially in hip-hop forums. lol.

ha... i knew it, the person who open this is such an IDIOT, why don't you use that BRAIN that was given and USE it, what a stupid title
and GANG STAR!

...what?

From what I can see, timemaninjail probably just said this whole topic is stupid, and that the hip hop duo Gangstarr was his favorite. Yea, gangstarr is pretty nice, they had primo, who is still making nice beats.

I think the topic name should be changed to "what rap you listen to" instead of "what's good rap" because it's just people arguing with each other about what they like. If you want that, just go to hip-hop/rap forums, there's a shitload of that there...

i listen to real hip hop, most versions of it, i hate commercial rap, but think some songs are catchy. i think the best NEW rap comes from people like talib kweli, common and indie artist in that vein. i also like some hardcore underground rappers, that have nice rhymes, flow, and versatility. and that "keep it real" i listen to some of the whole "nerd rap" thing, and some people are good, but to think that tthat alone is good rap is ignorant. im from ny, and i guess im a little biased, b/c i dont really like many southern rappers. most of them are garbage. and i doubt most people on a hip hop forum are legitimate sources. theyll just hate, and have their ebattles, and be ethugs, esp. on hip hop forums p.s..LIL WAYNE IS GARBAGE!! i like some of his songs, but i dont think you know REAL rap if i hear u say lil wayne is the nicest.. u watch way too much mtv..youll never get tru hip hop from just watching music videos. u gotta live it

Lil Wayne is not Garbage. Granted I can't stand his ass, but he isn't garbage. His use of metaphors is exceptional, even if he's talking about something completely incoherent and foolish (which is the usual case). See this clip for reference.

But, since this stupid stuff is easy to understand, people seem to think he's the best because they can easily appreciate his lyrics.
Is he the best? Not at all.
Hottest? Not far from it.

@Rob1988
As far as big named rappers having other big named rappers on their albums... I think you answered your own question. I don't think their insecure as it is so much as them wanting a platinum album. It's hard as hell to do that nowadays, and having big named artists appear on your album can't hurt your chances.

@riney25
Technically Sage Francis is rap. Technically so are the Beastie Boys. Technically so is Limp Bizkit. That type of hip-hop/rap is considered alternative rock/rap, so it never gets the same glory as pure hip-hop/rap or rock.

I will post this here as it seems to be the general topic to talk about HipHop/Rap..

Warning rant...

Bought Common - Universal Mind Control yesterday after seeing it in HMV without hearing anything about it. Really disappointed, this was one of the few albums I bought this year what a fucking waste....

Generic, contrived and soul-less... a perfect pop album -_- With all the "in" things to boot, Vocodor, dancey beats and crude sexual innuendos in nearly every song.... Some listenable songs, nothing memorable..

Don't make the mistake I did, if you want to listen to it torrent it. As it seems this album was purely for the money so don't give him yours...

Don't bother with new Common shit, he's soft now, fuck that. Only good shit from him was "Can I Borrow A Dollar" and "Resurrection", but now he's lousy.

I have not heard the new, most recent Common album, but I own all of his albums up to and including Finding Forever. I can honestly say that all of them, including Finding Forever, are some of the strongest albums I've ever listened to, period.

Like Water for Chocolate, Electric Circus, One Day it'll All Make Sense, Be. All top notch albums.

Actually, when I listened to it again, "Can I Borrow a Dollar" wasn't that good. His best albums are "Resurrection", "Like water for chocolate", and "Be"[although I don't like Be as much].But then again, I'm not that much of a Common fan. And don't bother with his newest album, "Universal Mind Control" is garbage.

Electric Circus > the rest

I never understood why people hate that album so much 🙁

I like Common's New album.
The beats are dope. The lyrics are sick as well. Only thing I didn't like is it seems like he dumbed down his lyrics. There wasn't that much depth to his bars this time around.
O well. Its still a dope album if u ask me.

I AIN'T GOT NOTHING AGAINST ICE T OR NOBODY FOR THAT MATTER BUT I GOTTA RIDE WITH SOULJA BOY..

Don't know if any of you have seen this yet, but I think Kanye just compared Souja Boy to Nas.

Blackstar

If you're tired of "Get money, get hoes, get cars, cap somebody!", try these, lol. Some wouldnt be classified as rap, maybe hip-hop, but they are good either way.

this is mad funny.

I had to comment on this asshole's blog because there was one thing he put on there that pissed me off. I'll post it here just in case you can't find it on the link.

"Ok, everything was funny until #6.

I'm from New Orleans, and NOBODY calls people "Daddy" the way Lil Wayne does to Baby. When I read "Let’s just chalk that up to being a New Orleans thing" it instantly became the most idiotic statement I've ever read in 2008 (And I read the blog where Kanye thought that Soulja Boy was true Hip-Hop.) Don't ever fucking compare how one person speaks to how an entire city speaks ever again. "
