A lot of my friends are hopping on the Trekkie bandwagon after the latest glorious film. (SPOOOOOOOCK. KIIIIIIIIRK. <333333333) Anyway, I've always been a Trekkie and rather dubious about Star Wars - I do enjoy it, but nothing compares to Trek for me.

So which do you choose? No flaming of other people's opinions, please! And give reasons for your own. 🙂

For me, I just like that Trek has more science and less mystique, I mean the whole idea of the Force is pretty cool but more like something supernatural than purely scientific, you know? Not that Trek doesn't have its wacky moments, but still, it feels more "realistic" to me than Star Wars, somehow. I dunno. Maybe I'm just tripping.

I also see it as an actually plausible development of the human race and its future, like obviously there will have to be an organization like Starfleet once we become warp-capable, and the whole way it works as a military/diplomatic institution seems very convincing and common-sense to me. It feels less like another world and more like a future version of this one. I like this sense of plausibility - you know, if I were cryogenically frozen, I could wake up there. (Plausible? Lol. YES I'M GOING TO SAVE UP ENOUGH MONEY TO BE FROZEN FOR CENTURIES.) /freaky babble

Plus, seriously, Trek has Spock. It wins by DEFAULT.

Not a fan of Star Trek.

Star Wars can be nice sometimes, tho.

If you're including all of the Star Trek series, then that's what I pick, since I always enjoyed The Next Generation. I can't stand Kirk, or at least the way he was portrayed.
As to why I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars, it probably has more to do with sharing an interest with my father than anything else. It was something that we could watch or talk about together.

I never really thought Star Wars was that interesting..
I have a friend who's a huge SW fan and he gave me the first trilogie to watch. I almost fell asleep when I watched it (srsly) It was just so damn boring. And then you have the little magic tricks called the force and a bunch of other stuff that just doesn't make sense (How do you make a sword out of light? Are we forgetting the basic principles of light? If it was a plasma I could understand, but light? Really?)
And let's not forget how it all takes place a long time ago, very far away. What a coincedence that there was a human species there, with seemingly exact biological properties, and theyre called humans too?

Now Star Trek seems much more interesting. Maybe lower on action (it being a series and all, you can't really compare it to a movie) but the universe is so much richer. theres seriously hundreds of different species, the mechanics of things at least are tried to be explained. (mostly in way of just a bunch of scientific terms jumbeled together, a lot of which are made up, to sound smart and dificult)
And I like the fact that in most series they are still exploring the univers. Discovering new species and whatnot, I like that.
But sometimes ST feels a bit repetitive to me. I feel like there are a set number of different plot outlines for most episodes, they just get a few tweaks here and there.
Besides that, ST has Deep Space Nine, ugh.
But then again it also has Picard

But I actually like Stargate best 😛
(although that show also has it's problems too, like every species in the galaxy speaking english 🤨 )

I always considered Star Wars as a Sci-Fi, and Fantasy film. The the force seemed really like Ki or some spiritual energy. Also the idea lightsabers use crystals to produce a beam, that seems very fantasy to me too.

Though I do say Star Wars wins. Mainly for the fact that Jedi are knights of the future. Also I like the idea of being able to have mystical powers and shoot thunder through my hand, jump higher and a bunch of other things.

Star Wars without Lucas > Star Trek

Lucas ruined Star Wars with his Ironfist, lack of creativity in the plot and a greed to earn money,

Even though I like it, I have to admit Star Wars was more lacking in some aspects than Star Trek. Also, Star Trek is more sci-fi, whereas Star Wars is more fantastical and that's kinda.. not likeable. For me, at least. I do like SW, but I like ST more.
Also - totally agreed about Spock. He pwns all.

for me it works otherwise, I prefer Star Wars because its more fantastical, I never liked Star Trek, I dunno maybe because I disliked Kirk and Spook.

Aw Star Trek is winning and it's much more interesting than Star Wars. Sure I like Star Wars but that light dimmed when my cousin forced me to watch Star Trek. It's an awesome series 😀 McCoy is my favorite! I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek but then again I never was a fan of Star Wars. I'm not one to talk either because I don't know much history about either. Still I'm a Trekkie at heart 😀

Hey long time manga/comic reader, first time poster. Saw the topic and had contribute. I like Star Wars, the original 3 anway, better because of the storyline, production values (space and aliens look way better in Star Wars) and it's various nods to other epic movies.

If you study the plot of Star Wars it is inspired by many samurai and western movies (the part with Greedo and Han talking about his bounty is so western, and yeah Han shot first), with alot of our own civilizations cultural influences, roman/japanese/chinese etc. Star Trek on the other hand is purely sci-fi and watching it is like watching an after school special. Always a moral behind the episode, and never do they talk about anything to do with their own civilization, it always deals with some other race of people problems.

To put it bluntly star wars is on the level with movies like Yojimbo, Seven samurai, A Fistfull of Dollars. While Star Trek is more along the lines of Beverly Hills 90210, or Degrassi High.

May I ask how you put the connection between a high standard, engaging, expansive and rather creative sci-fi series, and some third rate soap operas aimed at people with an IQ below 80?

I've always loved the movies, but I've truly been a SW fangirl since they started releasing the Extended Universe books in 1995. I'm also a coder on an SW-based MUD, also running its website.

However, I like Star Trek too. I watched most of TNG, 1/2 of DS9, and some of Voyager. I never got into Enterprise though. I enjoyed most of the movies too. TOS didn't really thrill me, though.
