Take a look at the male options in those games...
They're either ugly, old ugly bearded geezers, steroid using ugly guys, or really really really ugly. Especially with games that don't have sliders or have a limited character creation process.
The female characters look decent at least, hence I choose mainly female characters for my mmos. I could care less if their armor sets have a largely skimpy appearance, I want to see the face of my character if it's going to be humanoid, guy options just look like crap in most of these games.
Also, the hair.
Male chars have crap for hair selection, it's always the same bald, shaved and short hair and that's it. At least with the female chars there's actually a variety of length and style to choose from to set you apart from every other char and player in the game.
Seriously, just take a look at the males in these games, and they're even uglier in wow than other games... 🙁
Every couple of years I might make an old geezer character and have him beat the crap out of everything for kicks but the rest of the time females > males in online games. 😃
Bottom line is what others have also said before, if I'm going to spend thousands of hours looking at the character it's better with a decent looking female and not an ugly-as-hell-piece-of-crap guy with square buttocks.

I'm a guy. Some reasons I prefer playing as a female character in games (from rpg to DOA)

Biggest reason, because I like staring at a girl while playing. 😛 It makes the game more interesting.

The games sometimes do differ, like Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire. Those slight differences makes the replay value increase in my opinion.

If it is a game like DOA, for some reason I fight better with the females than with the males... I don't know why, it just happens that way.
And basically just for the hell of it. It's a game, so why not be something I can never be? I also think its stupid when people make fun of guys for playing as girl characters (my friend says that happens on WOW) I really don't see a problem with it. 😕

Well my Cousin has a WoW female character, and he basically says that fellow gamers usually treat him nicer as a female character, then as if he was a male character

I just choose what I think looks best.
And I don't see why people make a problem out off these things. The only one who would care are those looking for GF/BF or looking to scam. I mean in WoW there are all kinds of different races, Nobody goes: "why are you ... (Troll, elf, tauren, orc, dwarf, etc.) you are human irl so you should play human here too"
I mean I would never play a tauren female, and never play blood elf male. Though I stopped playing WoW a long time ago.
