There is a something that I cannot name;
I know not after what my soul aspires,
Nor guess from whence the restless longing came;

Sure, because China was so powerful comparring to it´s neighbors, it basically defined all cultures of the eastern asia. You can see examples in japanese language, filosofy, architeture, agriculture and in endless other things, including art (not today´s situation, as China´s culture was blasted by the cultural revolution while Japan could develop our beloved anime and manga)
But Japan´s case was a little diferent: It remained free from invasions (that obviosly cause changes in culture, as we can see in Japan´s "californication") until WW2. And during the tokugawa era, that stated after the end of the sengoku (warring states) and lasted until the stat of the meiji era (as seen in "rurouni kenshin"), it was completely closed to the world. In this period, Japan colud develop it´s own kind of culture. It was in this time, for example, that apearred the tea´s cerimony
Anyway, Japan´s culture DOES resemble China´s, but has it´s own spirit
Horrible isn't it? The Europeans just have to come and mess with every other country. Let's see, they killed off almost 70 percent of Native American in America, they colonized Africa and took the natives to plantations as slaves, then they colonized China, Japan, India, and all the other Asian countries.
But we shouldn't blame them because it was a few hundred years ago. Back then, everyone was a little crazy.
Also, I believe that Japan's culture was disrupted, not during World War, but in "1854, Commodore Matthew Perry and the "Black Ships" of the United States Navy forced the opening of Japan to the outside world with the Convention of Kanagawa. The Boshin War of 1867–1868 led to the resignation of the shogunate, and the Meiji Restoration established a government centered around the emperor. Adopting Western political, judicial and military institutions, a parliamentary system modeled after the British parliament was introduced, with Ito Hirobumi as the first Prime Minister in 1882."-Wikipedia

Now about China, its culture has not been destroyed. True many many artifacts and such were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. But if you go to China today, the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Buddhist statues, artifacts, books, are still there.

China and Japan where never colonized...
China had to "give" Hong Kong and Macau true... but it was never really colonized.
As for Japan, it actually had it's own expansionist policy. And that's what got her involved in WWII (but it had them long before that).

Do you know that several countries came to China and raided the imperial palace? The plan was to cut China into different pieces, each to a different country. "In response the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China. Consisting of British, Japanese, Russian, Italian, German, French, US and Austrian troops, the alliance defeated the Boxers and demanded further concessions from the Qing government."-Wikipedia

As for Japan, I won't comment. They made some bad decisions in the past.

Doesn't matter... that's called a war and an occupation, not a colony.
And any country that loses a war has to make some concession... that's how things work in this world, nothing new.
A colony is when settlers are sent to inhabit the occupied region, with plans to stay and live there.
That was an occupation, the same way Irak and Afghanistan are now under occupation by foreign forces. It doesn't mean they are colonies. No one is trying to send thousands of settlers there...

aren't you been a little too technical? If I get the main point across, then it's fine. Europeans messed with almost every country there is to mess with. It's history, you can't change history. you also spelled IRAQ wrong.
Colonies, what are their purpose, to exploit the natives of their goods for the benefits of one's mother country.
