I'm looking for series which sound bad/strange when summarised, but actually work well and make sense in practice.

For example--

Gintama: Aliens appear in samurai japan.
Haruhi Suzumiya*: A paranormal obsessed girl is god and doesn't know it.

*though I've heard this applies more to the anime than the manga/novels...

And if you could include your own summary, that'd be really great.

Personally, I think this can apply to most manga, depending on how you summarize it. (Ex: Naruto? A ninja wants to be the very best there ever was. Bleach? An orange-haired dude becomes a god of death. One Piece? Pirates looking for treasure. Attack on Titan? Big monsters eat people, humanity builds walls.)

But, these manga do immediately spring to mind:
Arpeggio of Blue Steel Sentient moe battleships! Lots of great strategic warfare in this one.
Onepunch-Man (One) A guy defeats everything in one punch. Some great commentary on the problems inherent in turning heroics into something corporate. (Note: I am rec'ing the original webcomic, not Murata Yuusuke's adaptation.)
ReLife Some guy is given a mysterious pill that lets him take the appearance of a high schooler. He has to relive his last year in high school in order to get a job. Heartwarming, slice-of-life webcomic about youth.

There's probably a lot more, but this is such a broad category that I'm not sure if I'm rec'ing you anything you would even like.

(Oh, and for something that turns out to be as ridiculous as its summary makes it sound, Bloody Cross is a surprisingly good popcorn read. If you're looking for something like that.)

Yeah, this occurred to me only after I posted this, annoyingly. 😐 I was mainly trying to find the best examples; the kind even the fans can't quite summarise it to sound normal.

Erased had a pretty bad summary for a while. It was something like "struggling manga artist sometimes travels briefly back in time right before a disaster happens"

I thought it was going to be an episodic thing like detective conan where he just solved small disaster of the day kind of thing. I was so wrong.
