Pure Subtext

Also, is anyone following the Spring 2011 anime season? You guys really need to be watching Tiger and Bunny. Just check out its Ho Yay section on TvTropes.
Oooh, this was quite enjoyable! Nothing new, as typical as you make 'em...but so fun in its cliche silliness that I watched all 11 episodes within 2 days ^_^
And is it just me, or is Barnaby (Bunny-chan 😀 ) unusually good-looking for a guy in a mecha shounen?
Edit - I just realized that despite being tagged as shounen-ai, Jinjuu Houretsuden is only subtext, not canon. Same for Asterisk. Morimoto Shuu's latest, Moon Trick, should also be along similar lines as far as the relationship between the male leads is concerned.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet(or maybe it has and I didn't read it...), but Adekan is extremely subtextual

Adekan was mentioned a couple pages back, and yes -- I also agree that there's a good deal of subtext in it. And it's definitely intentional. Well, the mangaka herself admitted in one of her freetalks that she wanted to write something completely different from her usual (shoujo with female leads + het romance)
Tiger and Bunny is something I stumbled across quite by accident when I wanted to watch a mecha but couldn't find any popular ones that weren't ecchi. Whoever writes the 'Ho-yay' section for the TVTropes site sure knows how to make a mountain out of a molehill, though!
But slashy or no, the show is a ton of fun to watch. Kind of a pity there's only gonna be 15 eps - but it's a low-budget deal anyway so even that much is quite a feat.
To add, I was surprised by the level of subtext in Kimi ga Kimi de Aru Tameni. Definitely wasn't expecting it.
And Hanamatsuri is just subtext-laden, despite being tagged as shounen-ai. The series description says it all.
And to clarify on Toxic, which was mentioned by tartufo a while back; it's not really all that slashy. There are some characters who're obviously not straight, but they're all totally uncool bad guys so I don't think the fangirls will be too pleased 😉
Edit - @calstine; I'm glad to find someone else who thinks Barnaby is good-looking. I was wondering whether it was just my glasses-boy fetish or not 🤣

please save my earth has shounen-ai subtext between two of the main characters...due to the fact that one of them was a woman(called enju if i remember correctly) in his past-life and as a woman in his pastlife he fell in love with the other guy's former self....this sounds complicated but the manga is a must read

I wouldn't be too certain about that. Apparently, T & B was unexpectedly popular so it appears to have been extended. Just check out the Episode List at the bottom of this page.
Of course, this can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Many a nice story has been ruined by its sequel -- so much so that even the prequel becomes quite unbearable afterwards.
And I'm pretty sure the accusations of slashiness will cajole the creators into throwing a pretty girl into the equation to serve as Barnaby's love interest or something 🤢
Personally, I don't find Koutetsu and Barnaby's relationship to be all that subtextual -- but I also don't think it necessary for there to be any romance in this AT ALL. The show will lose every last fragment of its charm if Barnaby decides to "rid himself of the emptiness in his heart by looking for love" right? Or maybe that's just me >_<

🤣 I used to suffer from the same obsession back when I was younger. Needless to say, I don't think I've been completely cured of it yet.

@calstine - Wow, you're sooo cynical! But your fears are warranted, I guess. I've seen such things happen in plenty of stories, and have oftentimes being just as chagrined as you. Of course I'm happy to hear about the extension...but...we'll see how things go from here.
And no, it's not just you. I find that kind of cliche excuse for adding a love affair to the plot quite icky as well 😐
Edit - Oh woooow, your predictions are about to come true -- but only halfway. Did you see the preview for ep. 14? I knew from the get-go that she had a crush on him, but who'd ever have thought that he'd reciprocate 😕
Well, I guess it might just be a joke, but I'm not holding out on much hope.
Heh -- I feel like the two of us are turning this into a discussion for het subtext...

Well, well...my predictions are beginning to come true in a way that's actually scaring me! But in all seriousness -- I never expected a shounen to feature a pairing between a guy pushing forty who has a 9-year-old daughter and a high-school girl! That's more josei territory than anything. Episode 14 was just... 🙄
And now Sky High has a crush on someone?! Oh man, I really liked that guy -- he was just so adorably goofy! 😢
Thankfully, Barnaby hasn't been devoured by the Love Monster yet. But the way things are going, it'll only be a matter of time, mark my words! I wonder who his will be -- Agnes?
Lol kidding! (Or am I?)
Actually, I think it's quite necessary to discuss the het aspects of the titles that are suggested here -- especially considering that the OP specifically asked for stories where the BL /GL subtext takes precedence over the het romance; so I don't consider our posts irrelevant.
Anyway...a word of warning to all you fan-girls out there - if you're gonna check out Tiger & Bunny just for the sake of (vague) BL subtext, watch episodes 1-13 and pretend the rest never happened 🙂

Well, I've officially stopped watching T&B as of ep. 14. What they did to Barnaby's character post time-skip is too gruesome to even think about! shiver They reduced him from a mouthy, bratty tsun-tsun to an obedient good boy sidekick. Gross! 🤢
And does my eyesight fail me or is he totally ugly now? What the heck did they do to that megane bishounen of the first 11 episodes? 😢

That's part of the reason I'm stopping. I never liked Kotetsu so his crush on Blue Rose doesn't matter much. But I'm bailing before Barnaby gets all weak at the knees over someone. Agnes, huh? I don't think that's very likely...but who knows with Sunrise, anyway? Their reputation for being totally random has been duly earned, I'd say.
ANYWAYS, I'd like to rec something on the GL subtext front; Sister Red. This is no surprise, since the mangaka is Hayashiya Shizuru. It's an okay manga -- nothing too brilliant -- but...there's enough subtext to satisfy less rabid yuri fans.

Someone listed D.gray-man in here...I somehow can't find it, but I swear my eyes saw it. I watched the anime, Lavi flirts with Allen. Can I read the manga and still get my Allen/Lavi pairing from it?
