man, everyone keeps going on about how girlss in series aren't "the normal, weak, heroines.." i've been reading manga for years and have RARELY found a series like that...anyone have any thoughts? 😛

Well, there's Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club. Of all of the 'gender benders' I've read, she's the one who can blend in the most as a guy, as opposed to being ditzy or clumsy and relying on some guy who's found out her secret to always take care of her. Haruhi could care less if anyone finds out that she's a girl, unlike most of the gender bender shoujos. And except concerning herself, she's really fairly perceptive. It takes her a long time to recognize her feelings, and they come about in a fairly natural way.

How about Hikari from Special A? The most typical thing about Hikari is her cluelessness towards Kei. She's definitely not weak in the physical or emotional sense of the word, though.

I rather liked the girl from Kawaii Oresama too. It's a one-shot, so you don't get much character development, but she has a brain and a few clues to go with it.

If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.
