FFVIII was my fave xD, it' got a awsome story~ the battle system is awsome once you get use to it :3 if you equip the right magic xD you can one shot almost everything! the card game is great and it has... the coolest transportation in all of the FF games :3, loved Gunblade xD such a cool weapon and loved the romance!!
FFVII is kinda of over rated... to me at least :x the story is alright... epic... but not as good as FFVIII, the character is loveable but... cloud is kinda annony . hated... the materia system >.>...
FFXII totally suked... >.> horrible story... horrible character... boring main character... unexciting cinamatics.... bad airship design.... horriblely... long... play... hour... >.> took me over 100+ hours to complete the game the first time around >.>... i mean... if the game is that long >.> at least give it a better/longer story damn it! the only thing i like about FFXII.... is it' graphics...
FFX didnt finish... hated the main cast....
FFX-2... didnt finish >.> WHY!!! only 3 playable characters >.>
FFIX well... good story and loved the monkey boy :3
FFXIII hope it' going to be good xD just hope SE wont make the same mistake they made on PS2... >.> all graphic and no story and all saw the trailer and the plot seems interesting and it reminds me of FFVIII, lets hope it have a good story!!! and character develpment after all >.> story and character develpment plays a huge part for RPG lovers x.x or maybe it' just me

FFIII, I remember this one being pretty good, good story and the job system was pretty good too. The battle system was kind of slow paced though.
FFIV, This one would propably go for top3 FF games. I like the story and the characters.
FFV, I didn't really like the characters in this game, battle system (jobs) and story were decent. Somehow I got myself bored every time playing this.
FFVI, I don't really understand what's the fuss with this game. IGN Ranked this game #9 of all time (all games) which I don't really understand. Just doesn't fit my taste really.
FFVII, This was the first one I ever played when it came out (my first RPG game too) and propably the first FF game for most people. I enjoyed the story, sidequests and battle system. Would propably go to top3 FF games for me. (I think IGN ranked this about #60-75 or something, this and FF6 were the only FF games to make it to top 100)
FFVIII, The story is good and the game overall but... BUT, what the hell the junction system is total bull: Mass whore all magic, spend more time drawing magic than actually fighting -> Once you got the magics and have junctioned them, you never use them, just have them boost your stats -_-''. And for me this game is ridiculously easy because I'm the kind of person who avoids levelling characters and tries to go with low level characters for the challenge, but in this game guess what: you go as lv10 or something to the last boss and the last boss is lv10 too BUT since you whored all the magics it's way too easy. If it wasn't for the junction system this (oh and I almost forgot about the limit breaks, you can whore them too having Squall on low HP and doing renzokuken every turn, which is kind of stupid) would propably be top3 FF for me. Propably best thing in this game was the card game, almost forgot about it.
FFIX, First thing that pisses me off in this game is at start of EVERY battle you must watch the camera hover around the characters and enemy for so long it really gets on my nerves, you spend more time on victory fanfares and watching the battle start than fighting in this game. Story was kind of stupid and I hate it when 9y old arrogant kids go and save the world, I just didn't like this one too much. The card game was rather enjoyable too, but in the end it gets boring when it becomes too easy.
FFX, I propably spent most time playing this one. The story was allright I guess but I didn't really like the characters. There was lots to do in this game (since I had the PAL version with extras compared to the first release) and battles were quite enjoyable. Spent lots of time maxing everyone's stats in this one and getting the perfect gear.
FFXII, Story.. what story, character relationships are totally horrible. And the main character is REALLY annoying, even more annoying than Tidus, he just hangs around "i wan b sky pirate " the others for no good reason. It's just the story and the characters that piss me off. Otherwise the battle system and the gameplay is rather awesome. Beating the game with 122333 challenge and killing off Yizamat with my lv52 characters were really enjoyable experiences.
It's really hard to say which one's the best. Every game has its good and bad points, I don't really want to choose one and say which one is the absolute best
But I will say that Suikoden II and Chrono Trigger beat all these games easily

I 'd say FF VIII
For me, it has great plot, good human-like antihero & characters (sick of save-the-world cliche hero) & great music.
More to add ?
* You can see the characters actually developing during the entire game (especially the bad-ass Squall). Someone (nah, lots of pp actually) claimed that's emo. I strongly disagree. It's a very real & human-like development. The other characters have their own unique personalities
* Great dialogues between character. I still remember couple of them
* The whole world is fantasy but u can find it relates to the real world alot. (Gardens ~ college campuses; jammed canteen; hotdog (oh, poor Zell !))

Yeah, I agree. I loved the conversations between Squall and Rinoa.

It's arguable that he's squall is emo, but name one final fantasy main that isn't. Cloud is so coked up emo that the entire advent children movie he was slashing his wrists (who wouldn't be emo after your love is killed by sephiroth). Tidus hates his father and wallows all day long crying about how jecht doesn't love him. Despite his happy outward appearance, he flips everytime his father is involved. Sure, emo in society is seen as cliche pathetic but in video games, it is a key tool. No decent video game has an overpowered main character right from the start, it has to be developed gradually, both personality wise and combat wise. Because of that, video games need "damaged" protagonists, otherwise there is nothing special about the story. Who cares if a normal person overcomes adversity. It is when the traumatized overcome adversity that it is truly great.
Because of that, I like final fantasy 8 the best. Storyline wise, it is beautiful, but combat wise it was a bit slow. With that said, it was full of side quests and required a lot of dedication. With that said, it was a game that you could blitz through, or take your time and train (and for those who don't like training, there is the good ol' island closest to hell for a cheap quick easy route out of training). The world should've been bigger with more cities, but four cds, and ps1 technology, it was already huge considering the graphics.
The reason why i enjoyed this game more than any other game is two main reasons though, the junction ability and the authentic fantasy feel. final fantasy 7 starts out in a steel, train and steam city that looks more like an old workshop factory than a fantasy. Sure it expands to a new world, but it isn't too fantasy, everything was pretty real. Final fantasy 8 on the otherhand starts in a beautiful academy, a giant oddly shaped building that is not steel or grey, but a turquoise blue with streaks of yellow. The color scheme, the cities, they were all fantasies because nobody in their right mind would ever make a city like that. They have cars, they have flying fortresses, they have spaceships!
final fantasy 9...hated the main character. the moment i saw his monkey ass face, i couldn't connect with him and that ruined the game for me. Final fantasy 10, has a nice fantasy setting and a subtle anti-religion theme, but they didn't have a wide and expansive world like final fantasy 7,8,9. Some argue that they had more places and more detail, but these places are all set. You have to follow a set path, a set trail to get there. In final fantasy 8, you hop onto a chocobo and travel across the lands, shallow shores to find the chocobo forests! sure the graphics and detail across the land is different, but at least you can explore everywhere, whereas ff10 you can only explore a set course.

Final Fantasy VIII of course! (hence why i am RINOA_cooly). I had a tradition of switching back between 8 and 9 every summer (which i finally stopped once i was old enough and coordinated enough to beat both lol).
It was a good step from 7 with the graphics...i was a little disappointed when they went down to the cartoon style with 9, but 9 was still good. i mean, who can resist the monkey-tail!
Also not to mention Final Fantasy VIII was the first FF i actually owned. (my brothers and sister had the others, but they weren't actually mine so i felt no special connection to them).
I have to say its kinda sad how the Final Fantasy reign is kind of going down (especially since Nobou left! ~best composer ever~)

ffx was my first game for ps2 other than resident evil CV and it was amazing
but i've seen people play other ones, and i like basicly any of the games the most.

I value story more than gameplay and graphic, so for me it would be
1.FFVI
2.FFX
3.FFVII

1. ffvi
2. ffvii
3. ff tactics
4. ffviii
5. ffxii
ffvi was the epitome of what a 2d jrpg should be at that time. great story, gameplay, and music. ffvii is a very close 2nd, since i practically played the games in sequence, i had more of an impact with ffvi. but ffvii really up the bar that anything can happen story wise, has memorable characters, and the gameplay got ridiculously customized with limit breaks and the materia. tactics was like ffvi but for tactical/strategy role-playing game.

for me, excluding the tactics series, it'd be in this order: 6,7,9,5,8,4,12,10.
couldn't really judge the first 3 very fairly, seein as how i started rpg's during the 32 bit era, hence, i always look for some depth in them. of course the first 3 ff lacked this and my "new age" criticism would be very unfair to those games, hence, i excluded them. 11 on the other hand, i never played as i'm not into online games.
