In High School no one really cared. We had a lot of international students from Korea, Hong Kong, and a handful from mainland China and Japan. Some of my friends liked it but manga/anime was never popular and was never talked about in everyday conversation.
There is a club in my University but I'm not even looking into it... what would they talk about? What's recently released... I can easily do that here. embarrassed

At my school I know of alot of people that watch anime and alot less that read manga, but it's really just a way you define cool, and who defines it. To me it doesn't really matter if someone reads manga or not, though I do tend to talk to people that like anime.

Nobody at mine would even know what manga was, other than people who knew me. At uni people grow up a bit, nobody really cares. We have a manga library. ^_^

No. at my school less than 1% (Thats out of 1k, so only 100) people read or even knew what manga was. i was friends with most of them. and the people who did like manga (Me for instance), were made fun of on a daily basis(More like when they saw us read them) But they knew what anime was. The only good thing about me being a manga fan, is that i got the library to actually stock manga. i didnt really get to choose, but one of the mangas they saw me reading was put on the shelves xD Demon diary

1% of 1000 = 10....not 100... (~_~)

When I was in school, I had no idea what manga was, but then we're going back ~20 years for that. laugh

My kids don't know if manga's "cool at their school" or not because they haven't seen anyone reading it except for one Narutard who runs around with a Naruto headband on at lunch time.

At my university there are quite a few people who read manga (mostly boys, or even the girls only know famous shounen series, like Dragonball), and, well, while no one really makes fun of you, it's not an "in" topic of conversation, anyway.

In grade school and high school no one had ever heard of manga. Of course, I was the only Asian kid among the 160+ of my school year.

In college, it was popular in my set, but we were still at the stage of buying imports and downloading scripts. Heh. I still remember looking at the page and then turning your head to find the right line on an ancient dot matrix printout. Fun times.

Shhhh, Noone on this site can do math!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I made it 100 to make it sound cooler, but it was about 10 people. 20 max. and saying 2% is gay, and 10% would be the next best thing, but thats too much.... so ya, Lets leave it at 1% of 1000 = 100 :D... or not T_T

back in high school it was in different. Most people wouldn't think any less of someone who had a manga on them and would normally ask about them and skim through it.

Now that i'm in college it's about the same >.> I had a Japanese study guide near me in physics and the teacher was stopped and asked me if i was trying to learn it for manga. lol I told him that's part of the reason =P but for the most part no one cares. It's your life do what you want.

So many "no"s O_O

If you read it, you should think it's cool. "Cool" is subjective~

High school - didn't know manga, watched anime though. So anime's cool then.

College - yep, definitely cool laugh

Hmm. Well, in my year, there's like me and perhaps three others.
In the year before me, there's quite a few girls who read it and they're pretty hot! biggrin (though they read typical Shojo)
Makes me wish I stayed back to do TY, but ah well...

lolz Yeah it's the same for me too, but I knew some of the people in it and they were cool but naw I didn't have time for that.

In grade school it seemed like you weren't cool unless you watched Pokemon in the morning, DBZ in the afternoon, and the anime lineups on FoxKids and WB on the weekends. When I got to high school people played into the typical stereotypes and so it got less cool and more underground.
