Manga that just tugs at your heartstring.
I have no idea how the manga are in comparison to the animes but air, kanon, ef and clannad. I have no idea how the relation in sadness is from anime to manga but the animes made my cry and I'm a guy who can count on 2 hands how many times he's cried from non physical pain.

Oh does he!! that is awesome, another Chika-like character would be awesome though I thought it his next girlfriend would turn out to be the opposite of Chika. Well scanlations might be coming up soon since I saw men's kou on some scanlator group's upcoming projects. I believe it was transcendence.

No one mentioned Shin Angyo Onshi? Although to be fair you did say no depressing stuff. Give it a try maybe you'll like it. Definitely have you feeling for the characters it will especially in the middle...

Banana Fish has a good mix of serious, heart wrenching plot, action and light hearted banter
Sanctuary is a great read for making you care about the characters.
Also try
Angel Sanctuary
Let Dai - It is shounen-ai but don't let that put you off, there is no gay sex and it's definitely very emotional.
Asian Beat
Hope this helps.

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

If anime is okay as well, try 5 Centimeters Per Second.

Strobe Edge - The situation as well as the way the female protagonist handles herself is heartwarming... or should I say heartbreaking.
Nodame Cantabile - The relationships are heartwarming
The One - The romantic moments in this one simply makes me melt

That's known as a "coin".
