It's really interesting how good hentai mangaka can be once they switch the genre. Some of my favourites have done hentai before. Here's my list:
Ai-Ren and Itoshi no Kana
TANAKA Yutaka started to write profound stories about life and death after his hentai career. They ring with such bittersweet truth that its hard to believe he mainly did ero-manga before.
Nana to Kaoru
Even though his background is still apparent, AMAZUME Ryuta's masterpiece brims with good characterisation and realism. If it weren't for him, I would still have a very crooked understanding of what BDSM is about.
Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge
This twisted little series would have never made me guess that HIKAGI Tatsuhiko was a hentai mangaka before if not for his great ability to depict sensual facial expressions. Dark, twisted and adorable play-or-die situation.
Kono Oneesan wa Fiction desu!?
Looks like your normal ecchi rom-com with a decent male lead for once, and it proves your first impression right, only that it's better executed than most - so who would have guessed that MUTSUKI Tsutomu came from the ero department?
Blade of the Immortal and Bradherley's Coach
If ero-guro counts, then SAMURA Hiroaki matches your request as well. I haven't read the first series yet, but he has some fine artwork. As sad and despicable the events in the latter series are, his background still shines through faintly.

He can't understand that they end in him, but they don't end with him."
- Ursula K. Le Guin, Gifts[/color]
To be savoured:
- Blood Alone by TAKANO Masayuki
- Otoyomegatari by MORI Kaoru
- Gangsta. by Kohske
- Seishun Kouryakuhon by AKIZUKI Sorata

All choices are made in fear,
What you fear more is the only difference.
Positive decisions are made in fear negative consequences,
Negitive decisions are made in fear of positive decisions not giving the outcome you want.
Embarrassment is the fear of people knowing your real thoughts.
Greed is the fear of having too little.

Prism (HIGASHIYAMA Shou)
If you don't mind Yuri, this is my no. 1 Yuri manga.
Sadly it's Hiatus, but it's definitely worth your time.
