well first i would test it and once i found out it worked i would wipe out all the big time criminals at large, then i would tear out a couple pages and somehow get the people who i know that are bad people and would go to hell to sign there names in it to save them from hell(not that i believe in hell but just in case). Then i would keep a couple of pages to myself and give the book to someone who i truely belived would help the world without abusing it and if i could not find anyone to use it properly then i would hide it somewhere and keep it as a family hareloom.

even though its called a death note, there are other ways to use it. It's basically mind control, then you can just give some far off date in the future(unless there's a rule against that I don't remember).

I wouldn't trust myself with it either, and I think thats the correct answer. The most honest and good people would know better than to keep it where they might be tempted by it.
